The Honest Kitchen

In early March 2008, I just happened to find the following video on youtube about what's in commercial dog food ...and I was horrified. I posted a blog about it on smartgreenblog.com {my eco business} and was determined to get my dogs off this disgusting food. Please watch -even just a minute of the video below- so you can understand how disgusted I was by what I was feeding my dogs.

If you are interested in seeing more horror stories and more truths about commercial dog food, click here

So after seeing this, I decided I had no other choice than to feed my dogs an all raw food diet that I prepared myself. I immediately went to amazon.com and found 3-4 dog food cookbooks and awaited their arrival. When I did get the books and flipped through them, I realized that not only did I not have extra time to prepare gourmet dinners for my dogs {I barely cook for us} but that I was going to have to do far more research in how to ensure my dogs were getting the right nutrients.

My brother {who owns and runs a dog-walking/sitting business} came over one night and I explained our situation to him and he said that many of his clients' dogs eat this awesome human-grade food that's dehydrated and you basically just need to add water and stir.

WHAT?!?!?!? THAT SOUNDS AMAZING!! I yelped. He said it's a bit expensive but it's worth it. I told him that with LeRoy's skin condition, we were spending a fortune {anyway} on what we thought was holistic dry food combined with vet approved Eukenuba {made by the grossest pet food company, Iams} skin formula {along with about $200month on vitamins and meds}.

Intrigued, I went directly to our nearest pet store {NOT PetCo - because they only sell shit} but Maxwell dog in Studio City and asked the lady there about dehydrated food. She said it's called The Honest Kitchen and it's amazing and her dogs eat it and LOVE IT. I was sold.

the honest kitchen, dehydrated raw human grade dog and cat food, organic pet food, organic dog food

I picked up the chicken first to try it out and the dogs LOVED IT. So, I went online to thehonestkitchen.com and did a bit more research and found out just how awesome this food was. {and placed an order}

They use 100% organic grains, hormone/antibiotic-free meats and non-GMO produce. All ingredients are guaranteed 100% Human Food Grade. {that means, we can eat it!} All you do is add warm water {from the Brita filter}, wait a minute, stir {it looks like green or brown oatmeal} ...wait 5 more minutes/stir and serve. Sometimes I add carrots or apples or rice or meats but you don't have to, that's just extra. Also, you can see all the real food in it; bananas, chicken, apples, sesame seeds. It's really amazing AND their poop pretty much looks like the food {but nice and solid} AND it barely smells at all!!!! Organic poop! I'd say that's better for the environment too!

I wanted to wait a while to make sure I was in love with this product before blogging about it just in case I changed my mind. But I haven't and LeRoy's skin and coat look better, he barely has the farts anymore and I can rest assured that our dogs are getting the best nutrients any pet could get. {they have Prowl for kitties too} The main products we use are Force, Embark, Sparkle {herbal additive for coat} and Pecks {which the doggies die for}

go to thehonestkitchen.com for more info and if you decide to get some for your babies, use this code *BLOGGERMT* to get 15% off! Then, come back here and tell me how great you think it is.

major earthquake just now in LA

while the earth has stopped shaking, I have not. That 5.6 earthquake just felt huge. I'm surrounded by glass walls and a glass desk and just stood here not knowing where to hide. I'm all shook up right now. Although, this is not the first quake I've been through. We lost our house in 1994.

OMGossip girl - Summer re-runathon

click the speaker icon for audio

Is it me, or do like 9 out of 10 of the actors on gossip girl have severe lisp situations happening on, in, and around their mouths? There are so many close shots that's all I can focus on sometimes.

I'm gonna be honest, and I'm sure I'm not the first one to say this BUT, that show is HOT. h. o. t. and steamy! And every commercial break previews a trailer for next season {September 1st - I'm squealing!}. And let me tell you, it looks even HOTTER! Which any fan would know already. What season are we on? I just started watching like 3 weeks ago. But it couldn't be more than season 2 ...right?

Yes, it's ridiculously gratuitous and yes, they're supposed to be in high school but come on, we all know they're not {or, maybe they are. who cares}. This is no kid show but I sure as hell woulda wanted to watch it when I was 16. And if I wasn't aloud to, I would find a way. Especially in this day and age with all the technology at my fingertips. I was an avid 90210er {a show in which the actors WERE out of high school and some over thirty} and it didn't even come CLOSE to the sex-i-ness of gossip girl. not. even. close.

omg i love it. that's all.

Cuil ...is it?

A new search engine called Cuil (sounds like cool) was launched last night and it actually is, kind of cuil. It claims to have an index of 120 billion web pages {google doesn't disclose their info but I'm sure it's more}. Anyhoo, i like the way they lay out the search results but I'm sure it'll take awhile before they even come close to running google out of business. What do you think about cuil.com? Go do a search and check it out ...then come back and tell me what you think :)

Animal tricks

I don't know why but I really cannot get into animals doing tricks for humans. I just don't like it.

It's one thing to make your dog shake for a treat or stay while you balance something on their head {dooce} but it's another thing to cage an animal and make money off of their talents!

Monkeys in movies acting like humans? no.
The circus? no.
RODEOS? f*ck no. {hillbillies}
Sea world? no.
Even the zoo? no.

I'm not into animals being locked up and on display for human entertainment. Even as a kid I hated the zoo. I love animals. I hate the zoo.

bunnies.

I found this at dear ada, one of my new favorite blogs {as of ten minutes ago} and it spawned an insane infatuation {that I've never really had before} with bunnies. I'm now wondering if the pug and french bulldog will be able to be pals with one. hmmm.

also, insanely enough, many bunnies have an aptitude for opening envelopes. who knew?

one word. tongue.

and, are you kidding me?

Organic Express = Spud.com

what used to look like this:

organic express and french bulldog

now looks like this:

organic express, spud, organic produce delivery

Every other Friday I come home to a box full of fresh, local, organic produce and groceries - delivered right to my front door! {today is that day!}

What was once a small eco business called organicexpress.com is now {after merging} called Spud.com, an organic home grocery delivery service, supporting local, small-scale farmers and suppliers offering a variety of delicious organic fruits and vegetables that are tailored by you to your unique preferences. You can select individual items from the organic produce category for each delivery, or you can create your own Fresh Harvest Box for a grand total of $29.06 {$58.12mo}. Other plans are available as well. They also have organic groceries {other than produce} you can add to your Fresh Harvest Box only when you choose to. Really, it's awesome!

What's groovy too is that they donate money on your behalf to the SPUD community fund. So far, I have donated a total of $1.09 {I know, huge} but still, I am part of the climate change solution! ...and the food {not to mention the convenience of it} is delish too.

click here for their delivery locations

I'm not getting paid to talk about how great spud.com is, HOWEVER, I just noticed at the bottom of my receipt a coupon code CR5-993812 that will save YOU {new customers} $25 over 4 deliveries for signing up. So, do it, it's awesome!

Project Runway

Wouldn't ya know they'd do an eco show. I was complaining last week about their over-use of plastic bags when they could've easily used canvas totes and this week it's all about "green" fabrics. Touché Project Runway! You remain my favorite show on television ....but shhhh! don't tell gossip girl.

Thanks Kell!

Avoidance: My Closet

love maegan closet avoidance, clutter
Ugh. I've been avoiding cleaning out my closet and reorganizing it for ages now. Not a day goes by that I don't step partially into it {because that's as far as the door will open and room to permit me to stand} and think "omg I need to go through my shit!" ...and I turn around and walk {step} out and turn off the light.

Here's the thing, I'm kind of obsessed with organization, especially in my closets. My husband informed me the other day that "I like order" ...and he is right! Everything has it's place but not in that anal way, more in a way that makes it look like a STORE. *sigh* I love it. I'm positive it's my mother's influence and ya know what, I don't think it's a bad thing. In fact, I quite enjoy it. But sometimes I just let it go. I get a case of the "fuck-its" and avoidance kicks in hard.

I've concluded that there are more than just one or even two reasons why I am avoiding this project that I once would have jumped upon.

could it be:(?)

1. just lazy
2. I have outgrown my closet considerably. I have clothes hanging on the door of it, on the pull-up bar in the hallway, behind the office door (clothes I had planned on selling on ebay -um, over a year ago) They're everywhere. I hate it.
3. I keep thinking we are going to move soon so why bother now?
4. I will have to try all my clothes on and I don't think I'm ready to face the ones that may not fit right any more. {and by right I mean at all} scary.
5. that #4 is probably right
6. I also keep thinking that by some miracle I may get pregnant soon and that may change my decision on what to keep and what to give away.
7. It is going to make me want to go shopping in a bad way :)
8. Maybe a little bit of everything.

It's driving me bananas though. I can't work with clutter. I feel like I need a clean space to work on or else my creativity is lost. The same goes for the closet. I get in a rut of wearing the same outfits to work because - well, I know they work and it's easy. But then I think ah f*ck it!

The Dark Knight {The Bat Man}

the dark knight poster, batman
How many people played hooky from work today to go see "The Dark Knight"?

My husband was checking the ArcLight this morning to pre-purchase a ticket (and seat) for today and the 9am showing (in Sherman Oaks anyway) was SOLD OUT. SOLD OUT AT NINE AM? WHAT?
That is just crazy talk.

I may be one of the only few who doesn't care enough to see it in the theater. I'm waiting for DVD, but I'm not a huge fan of going to the movies. It's much like sitting in an airplane for me, which is not on the top of my list either. Saying that, there are three movies I am dying to see. And they are as follows:

Step Brothers July 25

Pineapple Express August 8

Tropic Thunder August 13

Unfortunately or FORTUNATELY, I will be dying with laughter at these three above mentioned movies {because I am dying now just watching the trailers} which embarrasses my husband to no end {I can't help it} ...unless we sit next to the Gospel Church goers, for we can assume that they will be louder than I. {but just barely ;)}

Blazers

So a couple weeks ago I went to a local thrift shop that I used to frequent and found a RADICAL {and silly - but I like clothes with a sense of humor} light purple blazer that just so happen to have the original Nordstrom tag on it. It was priced at $34 and when I went up to the register I mentioned it's high price to the 100 year old cashier who takes her job too seriously and she said {in your best granny voice} "Well, it's brand new" I quipped back "Brand new from 1987!" - and she gave me the evil eye. I bought it anyway along with a couple others which I am really excited about and the little shop donates all proceeds to cancer research so it's a write-off :)

Anyway, I wore it a couple weeks ago when we went out to Firefly for Chad's birthday over a little black bubble mini and LOVED IT. Yesterday my husband informed me that it was horrendous. I told him he didn't know fashion.

I just found this photo of Rihanna from a photoshoot with InStyle Magazine on this blog and the outfit is almost identical to mine. {but the background is not nearly as cool}

hers...
rihanna, instyle magazine, pink blazer

mine...

Project Runway ...f*ck yeah!

Omg can I tell you how excited I am for the new season of Project Runway? Really excited. ... more to come

The show was good. However, after they got their first challenge and went running through the grocery store to pick up whatever materials they were going to use to make their garment, they all came streaming out of the store gripping bunches of yellow plastic bags. I kind of honed in on this for a while because what a perfect opportunity for Project Runway to show that they are doing something for the environment by using canvas tote bags instead of creating more waste with plastic. Not to mention all the waste that came from the materials they used.

Who can take this guy seriously? Seriously.

I'm excited for the contestants. I think some of them have great potential. I loved the cup dress, and the yellow kimono dress with the veggie neckline. I LOVED the print the bleach made on the vacuum cleaner bags but I wish she would have used more for the top instead of coffee filters.

SPOILER ALERT. I think the leather lady should have gone home. At least the guy who created the horror film outfit had creative potential.

Sitcom Neighbor @ The Derby

It's an unusually busy week for us!

Last night we headed to The Derby to check out my uncle's band Sitcom Neighbor and they were awesome! It's so great to see my uncle wailing on the drums. We're a very musical family. My grandpa and two uncles are drummers and my late grandma and her sister were singers. {more on this later}

Of course, it's always nice to hang out with the fam and since my best friend just happens to be my cousin - who is really more like a sister, family get-togethers are more fun. Kelly's {actual} sister, Kristie and her man Walter are a hoot too. {yes, I just said hoot}

Here's some pics...

...okay, I lied. I just found this pic of our family on Kell's blog and I had to steal it. The "rocker" top left is uncle Kelly. My mom is the blonde on the top right and then my dad is left of her holding my bro. Kell is in pink with bangs on the bottom right, then her sis, Kris, then me with the shiny grey, then our grandma Masumi and Corey, Danny and Cherie's daughter(the couple in between my parents and uncle Kelly). note* cousin Kelley & (her dad) uncle Kelly have the same name :)

My brother looks about 1 or 2 so this must be like 1984 I'm guessing. I could also make a guess based on Kristie's hair. She had some RADICAL do's in the 80's, no joke!

teeth are weird

I mean, they're your bones. sticking out. if they were sticking out anywhere else on your body, people would be freaking out about it. but no. no one freaks out about teeth. well, I guess when you first get them as a baby, people freak out. but then, after they've all fallen out and replaced themselves with bigger versions, no one thinks twice about the bones sticking out.

except about how white they are. ...and how much they cost when they break. weird

Pole Star Invitational, 2008

Last night my husband and I had the honor of attending the Pole Star Invitational, 2008 and I just had to share my experience with all of you.

How, you may ask, were we invited to such an event? My father-in-law's girlfriend, Natalie, was a contestant. Tickets were 50$ and we had drinks prior at Miceli's next door so we were a little more ready for what was ahead of us. Sadly, Natalie was eliminated in the first round and we didn't stay to see who took the 10K prize, but our night, was priceless.

Pep went to the website where the event was going to be held {Element, Hollywood} and to the Pole Star site about a week ago, and from the photos, imagined a nice, candle-lit space where we would all be sitting in sexy booths and judging these amazing acrobats twirling on poles. He was rudely awakened when we walked in and the entire scene looked like a rap video. {which was exactly how I imagined it}

While the idea of going to this event initially turned me off, I knew it would result in a fun time, some laughter and a great story.

Take a look ...
Contestant no. 1

Contestant no. 2 "Isis"

Contestant no. 3 "Saucy" (or "Swan" ..shit)

"Makin' it Rain" fake money

I think that is Ray J w/ the heart t-shirt

I don't know if she is the BEST pole dancer ever BUT she definitely knows how to put on a show and work a crowd. Her songs were the best: Poison (BBD), Can't Touch This (MC Hammer) and Ice Ice Baby (Vanilla Ice). She killed it!

The girl on the pole is the "Pole Cleaner" and after every round, she has to shimmy up and down the pole, wiping it down....it was annoying because it took forever and the f*cking MC was YELLING into the mic all night long. We are still having trouble hearing today. *Pep says the guy in white played Mike Tyson in some HBO movie and was "Spawn"

Contestant no. 4 "The Teacher" She was probably the most athletic/gymnasticky and less stripper/sexy

AND the pièce de résistance, Contestant no. 5, Natalie, my future step-mother
{I kid because it's just too funny not to}

This is my favorite!

*It was actually quite dark in the club (as in the second photo from the top) but the higher up the girls went on the pole, the brighter the photos got.

I wish all of you could have been there with us to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event but hopefully I captured it's essence via photo ;)
