Vintage Style Inspiration… Channeling The Other Side Of Midnight 1977

The Other Side Of Midnight
Starring: Marie-France Pisier, John Beck, Susan Sarandon

A Greek tycoon’s French movie-star mistress tracks her ex-World War II lover. From the Sidney Sheldon book.

This movie is quite fabulous. It aired over a month ago and I caught it just as I was trying to fall asleep and was captured by the spectacular style details. I recorded it because I wanted to inspect every single one of those details {fashion, decor, makeup, hair, accessories} when I was good and ready.

What I love most is that the movie is set in the 40’s but it was filmed in the 70’s so it’s really interesting to see how the set decorators and costumers decided on the look of it. For instance, in almost every scene, the main actress, Marie-France Pisier, is wearing huge platform 70’s heels with a 40’s {& sometimes 50’s & 60’s} inspired ensemble. It’s to die for! Here are some stills I snapped with my powershot for inspiration.

How perfect is this room? Notice the use of complementary colors blue and orange and all the perfectly placed details.

This is one of my favorite looks. It was even more gorgeous on the screen.

I definitely have seen a modern version of this couch floating around the decor blogs.

…to. die. for …

Some of my absolute favorite movies to watch and gain inspiration from are period pieces from the past {as this is} …the mix of the generations usually springs to life some original creations in a time when really, very little is original any more. …click to enlarge all photos in a slideshow if you like.

You know, you remind me of a young Susan Sarandon – Susan mixed with a bit of Grace Kelley. Not a bad combo at all!

Damn, I can’t believe I missed DVRing it again. I remember seeing this movie as a kid (yeah really taboo, esp the bathtub coat hanger scene). What channel did it come on?

Oh and I forgot to add that I loved Lace I and Lace II for the glamour and interiors. Phoebe Cates was beautiful.

I loved the leopard coat. Wow.

But some of the clothing/hair was very not-1940s. I hate when movies that are supposed to take place at a certain time are not accurate.

I meant to add, like “The Godfather”. Great story, but the costumes seem to flip flop between time periods badly. I was soooo confused on the setting the 1st time I watched it.

These are really inspiring stills, despite of the decades’ mash-up. Susan looks amazing in that low cute dress, she was (and still is) such a babe.

I absolutely LOVE the old movies. I like the ones from the 40’s/50’s. And I love their styles. I would love a 50’s inspired wardrobe! (Especially those pantyhose with the seem running up the back of the leg!) 😉 Lol. Just posted the other day a picture from His Girl Friday. Rosalind Russell’s suit, but I don’t think I could off that hat she wears. Haha

Love the clothes! I love how the outfits all look so polished and sophisticated, yet still retain a little bit of sex appeal somehow.

I absolutely agree about gaining inspiration from period movies. They’re such a great source of fashion inspiration 🙂

Wow, I didn’t realize they made the book into a movie–I’ll definitely be checking it out. I hope I find it somewhere. Sidney Sheldon books have always been my guilty pleasure 🙂 Everyone looks so elegantly classic in these pictures…I can’t wait to watch it!

Wait, IS that Susan? Maybe I’m just slow on this one but I thought you said it was someone else. Whatever. 🙂 (I’m a total Valley girl too, especially b/c the high school I went to was called Valley High!) Like, duh!

They really knew how to run shizzle back then didn’t they? And you’re so right. Nada is original any more. I’m going to start digging out some oldies for inspiration too. If you haven’t seen it, you have to see Roman Holiday. One of my all time faves.

Yet another example of why the 70s suck just as much as the 50s, 60s, 80s, 90, 2ks…

Susan Sarandon was, is, and will always be ugly.

Wow, I haven’t seen that movie in ages. I miss having movie night with my Mom. We’d sit in her bed and watch old black and whites to current movies.
Have you seen what Susan Sarandon wears in Bull Durham? I love her look in that movie too.
Those bathing suits are killer, I need one asap.

    xxoo
