Be Original

Nothing is more exciting that visiting a blog to see that your creativity has inspired someone else ...only to find that they have not credited you as their source of inspiration and not only that, are getting praise for your idea.

It's frustrating ...to say the least.

Anyone want to rant a little about this? ...feel free ...anon, if you like :)

See you later for an outfit post ...that is if I ever stop blogging and start getting ready for work. . . .lol. Happy Friday! Happy May!

...added later . . .

These comments are fabulous!

...just an fyi ...it has nothing to do with outfits {there are many fashion bloggers who came before me} ...and I am happy to inspire your outfits!!!

...these people I'm referring to also never leave comments :) ...so it's none of you fabulous lovers!

...just another fyi ..I did take the "Completely Gratuitous" part of my titles from Perez. ...and I originally named them that because I was embarrassed posting so many photos of myself ..not any more, clearly :)

...just another fyi ...I know that many MANY people are conflicted with this on a daily basis ..and I thought it would be a nice place for them to rant about it.

:) ...so keep em coming! Tell me how you were plagiarized! ...I love reading them!

I don't want this to go any further and become even more petty than it is BUT....I will say that the ONLY reason anyone even knows who these bloggers are is because CUP OF JO linked to them. So I'm thinking that maybe they shouldn't bite the hand that feeds them and think about blog karma a little bit. :) love you guys!

How frustrating, darling! People can be so clueless sometimes...

How rude! You're too fabulous not to get credit for your ideas!

Pretty Little World said...

This would be especially frustrating - people put hard work into posting, and credit should be given!

By the way, I'm smitten.in love.coveting your gorgeous Burberry Trench!

obviously don't know who you are a'talkin bout...or even if it is your blog that you are defending here...but have to say...since yours was the first blog that i found that did outfit posts...every one since then i instantly think..."uhhh...maegan rip off!!"...not saying folks can't share their fab fashion pieces...but you are this lady's original completely gratuitous outfit poster!

I have had battles with copycats since kindergarten. nothing drives me more crazy than being ripped off, so I get it.

The Beauty File said...

You are one of a kind & impossible to replicate...try to see it as a weird form of flattery, smile & press on!

Have a great weekend...thanks for stopping by!

My girlfriend has a blog in which every month for the first year of her little dude's life she wrote him a letter. Imagine her surprise when she happened along a site where a girl was doing the exact same thing. Except she was using my friend's words verbatim. Slimy!

purest form of flattery?

lolita from Insomniac Lolita did a post about this a couple of weeks ago. Frustrating isn't it? happy Friday and can't wait to see today's outfit!

Anytime I see an outfit post that isn't yours it always reminds me of those designer imposters body sprays from the 80s.

i am just glad i know there is NO WAY it could have been me cause i have TRIED pulling off your ideas and outfits before and i just can't do it ;-) you're TOO cute

That would completely irk me if someone did that to me. I mean, come on, how hard is it to just give credit where credit is due!?!?

that is frustrating! That would so annoy me! Hang in there!

that's the worst part about the internet. it's too easy to steal from somebody else.

It is frustrating and it makes me angry even when it doesn't happen to me! sorry for that but I hope you let them know that they shouldn't steal from you.

Just A Mom (Call me JAM for short) said...

There's only one "Maegan"!

Carrie said...

This is happening more and more and I guess can be expected with the breadth of the internet.

There are a lot of people that don't think about this kind of thing at all and then add to it the ones that purposefully take material to present as their own. That has been happening in leaps and bounds and to some really big blogs.

It's sad that everyone who writes a personal blog is going to have to copywrite their material to protect themselves, their images, their content but that's seemingly the way this whole intertube thing is playing out. I like to think the folks doing the bad stuff are few and far between but I don't always have much faith in humans when it comes down to it, our track record for good decision-making is quite lacking :)

Mrs.GB said...

I always link back. If I don't it's a goof on my part, and I would hope that whom ever I'm referencing in my posts would let me know so that I could correct my mistake.

But if they are flat out plagerizing... shame on them!

f'in rude. i hope you put them in their place! i would love to see their apology post to you! sorry, i like to LET people know they are POOP. bad flaw, right?

Dooder City said...

People like to copy because they are unoriginal...you should really call that person out.

amber {daisy chain} said...

I've been seeing it more & more lately. I actually did call someone out once - she used pics of party decorations I did for my daughters birthday without even a credit. Can you imagine?

I don't think anyone can imitate you well, Maegan — but I do think that posting outfits is something many bloggers do and have done for a long time. Are those outfits as great as yours? Probably not. :)

Diana said...

gah! i agree! i once found my photos on polyvore and weheartit.com without credit!

happy may day!

♥Aubrey said...

I absolutely agree! Be yourself...
It's about time someone spoke about this issue. You're a true original when it comes to posting "the outfit of the day."

ms. shoo {shebreathes.com} said...

It's like you were reading my mind. I have dealt with thieves and content lifters too many times to count. To say I'm frustrated is an understatement, since I ask for very little. A simple line of credit is all that's needed.

I'm currently dealing with a blogger who basically was doing the same thing. While, coincidences happen, and yes we might even all run the same content. But you know when someone is lifting when 90% of your most recent posts show-up on their blog. And when you have proof to back it up. It's just sad when it's someone who claims to be a fellow blogger.

So, I completely understand where you're coming from. As result I've had to create terms of use and disclaimers, crazy but necessary.

ms. shoo {shebreathes.com} said...

Oh and darlin' no one can be you, they can imitate, and copy, but you're one in a million.

PS: Don't publicly blast them before sending them an e-mail. There are some steps you can take if you truly feel like someone has infringed upon your copyrights, and I wrote about it. See the link below, and let me know if you need any help.

La Belette Rouge said...

Yep, I have had it happen. I try to tell myself that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Paul Pincus said...

i'm all for outing them ; )

i think it's safe to assume that when someone does this that they're probably not getting laid.

ps who's copying you? i'll stop by their blog and leave a comment that will leave them "dry" for a year.

Wanderlusting said...

Ugh - that's lame. But on the bright side, EVERYONE knows you came around first! I would totally call them out on it, like someone suggested but I get agro like that sometimes lol.

What might cheer you up. MORE GIVEAWAYS!!!

I'm giving away a FREE BRAND NEW FOREVER 21 Dress on my blog :) be sure to enter, post haste :P

oooh - I want the details of this one.

I thought I recognized that headline from Perez (love him, too).

Stealing others' content - uncool!

Holly said...

let us know if they retract their post after they see this!!

The Seeker said...

I don't know the situation you're talking about, but I think you should tell the person that the original idea was yours.
Can it be possible that the person do not know that should credit you???
Anyway it's frustating.
Hope you'll find some "peace"

xoxo

Sorry you're having to deal with that girl!! I saw a recipe on a blog and someone had commented that they had seen the same exact recipe on another blog and the person had passed it off as their own AND had used this poor girls picture, with no mention of the girl whatsoever! Just rude!!!

Enjoy your weekend!!! : )

Mary said...

the dets, the dets!!

I think its pretty crappy for someone to do that. If you can't think of anything original, please just don't post that day!!!

esther said...

completely understand. this has always been something that bugs me in 'real life' too. :)
all it takes is a little gratitude, and then we'd feel completely different about the fact that they were using our idea. we'd be flattered instead of pisssssed!

I like what Paul said!

some people seem to take and take and TAKE and never give! i hate it!!!! and it is hard to bust them even when you know they are guilty, as it sounds petty and mean. bullocks! the whole thing drives me batty.

SO annoying!!!!!!!!!!! If you're gonna copy someone make sure you linky to them!!

knitkicks said...

Name and shame I say! Although that would just give them more visitors on their blog so maybe not

I would hate that

The same thing is happening to me as I write this. I'm trying to be upbeat about it...imitation/flattery...blah, blah, blah. But things/posts/ideas are being lifted and it's beginning to piss me off a bit. My whole blog has been visited by this new blogger...hours must have been spent. I'm not the confrontive type though. Obviously, since I'm posting this anonymously. It feels good to vent a bit though. Thanks for that.

Girl Japan said...

Sometimes when I am writing I get nervous, did I read this somewhere, hear it somewhere, but you gotta credit the original, stay fabulous, stay true to yourself and naturally you garner your readers...

hmmm they never comment, huh? Chicken's..

ugh im sorry that sucks. theres been a lot of plagiarizing stories floating around lately. its quite disappointing. anyways, ive been meaning to leave a comment for a while telling you that because of your inspiration, combined with something my friend did, i have been doing outfit of the day posts. (and i did give credit where credit was deserved :])

love, jess of yours truly dear

ohboy...I hear you lady. My favorite is when you call them out on copying you and they either ignore you or tell you that they've never seen your work or blog or whatever before. ok...whatever. It does depend on the person bc I get emails all the time with people complimenting my stuff or telling me how much they love it, etc. but we're not talking about those folks...
either way, you are FABU and your voice will never be completely copied bc you are an authentic and honest person. Just think of them as the "Made in Itary" "Gucci" and "Fendi" that you see on the side of the road or in someone's trunk in the Valley a la that Sex and the City episode. "my marriage is a Fake Fendi!" - and so are those un-inspired copycats. happy weekend! xx

ps--my other fave line from that ep: "that Bunny stole my bag!"

K @ Blog Goggles said...

I feel you. It stinks to have your ideas/hard work/finds passed off as someone else's. I feel like confronting the person is best, but past that, it seems like we're all just too polite to do anything. There are so many blogs out there, it's hard to know which are genuine and which aren't.

Joanna Goddard said...

i hear you! i know how frustrating that is...for example, i saw my *engagement* photos (!!) on ffffound but no link to me....things like that can be so frustrating. but one bright lining to remember is that people adore your blog and staying true to yourself and following etiquette yourself will bring you deserved success...and the copycats won't have that! :) ps. thanks so much for linking to me here :)
