That's the way
you explain it to yourself?

...was Matt Lauer's response to Miss California's explanation of her actions ...which made my husband and I laugh out loud.

Everyone has a right to their opinion ...I guess I'm just surprised that this girl represents my state.

I thought Californians were open-minded? ...To each his own? But I guess this explains why gay marriage was legal once here but now is not.

...psst. this is hilarious!

I agree, I cant believe this ignorant broad is reresenting us. What decade is she stuck in. gosh it makes me livid. What a MORON!

You know this opinion that people are not equal based on their sexual preference really pisses me off! WHO the HELL are we to make such a judgment call!! Nobody - that is who! You may not agree with it - but that gives you no right to determine equality. People are PEOPLE!

Sorry - OF COURSE, not yelling at you! I'm yelling at THOSE people. Ugh!

To each his own! Matt Lauer was so condescending though...it cracked me up too!

It's strange. I was brought up in a strict Christian house, so I know where she is coming from.

& to each his own. I'm not gay, but if they want to get married, if they want to make that commitment, that's fine, We should be encouraging that, not banning it.

That being said, do we really want these girls to go against their own personal beliefs for the sake of a crown? Being Miss USA isn't everything, and I believe society is losing it's convictions just so we can be "politically correct" & that's total BS.

Good on her for standing up for what she believes in. It's a beauty competition. They're making it political.

Ok. I'll get off my soap box now =)

I am all the way in Australia, and I was angered by her answer. Anyone who is in love (doesn't matter gay straight, bi) should be able to be legally wed.
That's my view anyway

Bambola: well said! ...and agreed. She should be able to say what she actually believes and really, because she did, she will be more well-known than the actual winner.

Diamonds: totally.

thank you for supporting marriage... for everyone.

We really just want them to look pretty. Maybe we should stop asking them to answer questions. What scares me is that she was actually coached a lot for the answer that she gave.

There are so many other things to be worried about in the world than same-sex marriage...and it should not even be an issue to begin. My hope is that this nobody fades back into obscurity very soon.

Finally, Matt needs to "man up" and get out of that sling already. =)

You know, all I could think about was, if a conservative judge had asked her that question, and she had answered that she supported gay marriage and then THAT had cost her the crown, I would be fucking pissed. Perez wants to pretend he was mad because of the quality of her answer (which admittedly sucked) when in reality he was mad because she didn't agree with him. That's something that conservatives are known for. He should have risen above this lame situation, AND this dumb skank by letting the suckiness of her answer speak for itself.

Seriously... This girl went to school with a few of my friends and some of their younger sisters. Oh, the controversy!

That is sad that she represents California.

But not surprising since it seems that most Californians have her view her and think it's their right to take away other's rights. At least in conservative OC - blah!

I guess it shouldn't surprise me that people are still segregating gays and lesbians from marrying.
Maybe it's because I am Canadian, but I don't see the big deal. These couples need to have the same opportunities that their straight counterparts have.
I'm sorry, but I am unsure as to whether a gay person can add their partner to their group benefits, like dental and paramedical services available through work. Also, what about their rights to their partners pensions, or widows benefits?
Anyway, I agree with Perez. She needs to represent everyone, not just the ones she believes in.

Although she didn't say something I agree with, she did a very good job of defending her answer and still not giving in just because people didn't like her answer.

I totally missed it and I'm glad that I saw it here.

I lived in Berkeley, California for over two years during high school years - and Berkely is one of the most liberal towns in the nation. But I know that not all of Californians are open minded. It would be ideal if not only Californians, but everyone in this country is open-minded, but that's not always the case. The town I live in Florida is very open-minded and liberal and there are many arty and gay people living here. But like you said, everyone has a right to their opinion; like all the gay people have their right to their happiness, christian people have their right to express their belief. However what she said was really closed minded and too bad she had to express it on national tv.

miss alice in wonderland said...

I am absolutly pro gay marriage but I stand up for miss california... because I guess beeing miss america was really important for her and giving it up by saying her true opinion and not this 'world peace stuff' even it is totally wrong and close minded its her opinion and saying this on TV and in front off TV, the judges and the direct audience is pretty brave! So even WHAT she said is bullshit THAT she said it is really cool!

I thought her answer seemed jumbled and it made her seem dim-witted. And I don't like Perez Hilton at all.

yeah, i totally agree that everyone is entitled....but your right it is rather crazy that she represents cali....however i think that question was a bit unfair given the diversity of peoples questions....either way she fumbled through it horribly....and didnt deserve to win. I think the way perez responded was waaaaay rediculous. He bashes her for being herself for being honest....which is what he is all about....its absurd to me.

Staci said...

i meant belifes not questions...lol

I am amazed that as "liberal and free thinking" as people are, that this girl is not allowed her opinion without such harsh judgment. Didn't CA just vote no to gay marriage? So it seems she represents the majority. I can't figure out why Perez Hilton was even a judge. He asked her opinion, she gave it, and he couldn't deal with it. Maybe he shouldn't have asked a question he couldn't handle both sides to. She has every right to oppose gay marriage. Just like others have every right to support it. People need to suck it up and be tolerant of BOTH sides.

The Beauty File said...

I just so happen to tune into the show just as she is answering that question & then they immediately cut to Perez who wants to bury his head in his hands. Totally ridiculous, I can't believe she made it to #2!! It's like, how do these people make it on tv???

Shannon said...

Thank you for standing up for something like this.

Yes, she is entitled her opinion, but it just sucks. It doesn't matter if it's the President, Miss America, or John Doe. It's just another person against love, and that hurts.

scarlethue said...

I gotta say, I respect the fact that she speaks her mind. Even if she is WRONG. I suppose that's what being an American is about.

I agree and her christian church should be proud.;) But I also dont thing Perez should have called her a stupid Beotch in an interview either- BUT I do understand his anger....

Entitled to opinion... sure.

Absolute moron... CHECK.

Tara Gibson said...

ehhh.. I have refraied from my opinion on this.. I dont think Perez should have been a judge in the first place.. just my opinion. I think he acted completely absurd. I admire her courage for standing up for what she believes in. Some may call her ignorant, but if people cant respect her opinion like they do perez's than they need to look in the mirror!

Kimberly said...

Just because someone doesn't share the same views as you, doesn't make a girl "ignorant".
She has every right to her opinion and I think it shows her integrity. Not giving in, just to win a crown? That shows class. Californians should be proud.

Wanderlusting said...

She is totally entitled to her beliefs and has the right to say them. That's just what she believes ( and no it's not a Christian thing because I am a Christian and I totally support Gay Marriage).

HOWEVER she is an idiot in the sense that, uh, didn't she realize the entire Miss America Pageant audience is GAY!? Ha. Makes me think she was probably set to lose lol.

Mrs. D said...

Well said, Kimberly! It's amazes me that people can only see one side. Some people want tolerance and acceptance for all views/lifestyles, etc, so SHOW IT.

~Linds~ said...

This was very disappointing for me. I can't believe of ALL people to give this response to she said it to Perez Hilton! Love him but he has the biggest mouth in the UNIVERSE!

I think there were ways she could have stayed true to her beliefs but yet NOT offended gays and lesbians AND their supporters in the meantime.

Glad she will not be representing the US but then again this pagent is pretty much a joke these days anyways.

inkOBSESSIONdesigns said...

I totally missed that interview. Sorry California.

jmae3 said...

I agree w Christina Lee...It didn't make Perez look very good for him to go name calling. We all want tolerance for the liberal views...but a christian is not allowed to be tolerated for our views. We are all people and are entitled to our opinions regarless of others views. but to sling names and such just gives a bad view of the people we represent. I feel that Miss CA did what she felt was her belief and I'm proud that she didn't back down over something that she is passionate about-just to win a title. She could have easily taken the easy road-but was true to herself. I'm a former Californian and No-not everyone supports gay marriage...obviously or the bill would have passed-so she rep'd her state just fine in my opinion...maybe not all but what appears to be the majority!

The Alleged Ringleader said...

I too cannot believe she represents our state! It's baffling the amount of ignorance and intolerance that exists in this day and age. Unbelievable!

drollgirl said...

well she wins the crown of MISS NITWIT USA for sure.

Leia said...

If she's so interested in following life according to Christian beliefs, then isn't vanity a deadly sin? And what is a beauty pageant if not a legitimate way to express one's vanity and win a prize for it??

Ariel said...

Hey, she said what she felt and that is something she has every right to do. Is her opinion outdated in this time and age? Yes. Could she have phrased her thoughts in a more appropriate manner? Oh, yes. But it takes balls to stick to your guns.

Robin said...

Perez judging a beauty contest.........pleeeze. Since when does some who guy who blogs about celebs and draws pictures all over them earn the right to judge Miss USA?

Was she to say she was for gay marriage if she wasn't? Good for her for speaking her mind. I might not agree with her but at least I know where she stands! Wouldn't it be GREAT if our politicians were like that?

Chessa! said...

it still perplexes me that people can be so ignorant. My favorite part was when she said "it's biblically correct" - um, ok...Now that we have that settled!
