Navy + Black = Together Forever

Sartorialist-navy-black, wearing black and navy blue
The Sartorialist

navy and black - goldenheels1
Jak & Jil

Two great colors. A necessity for many Catholic School Girls who, like myself, resorted to black tights on cold days in rolled up plaid skirts. But for years and years and actually as far back as I can remember, wearing black and navy blue together was a huge a "no-no" ...and now? Suddenly it seems so fresh and new! Go figure?

We may as well just continue to wear white after Labor Day and all the way through to Spring! Pshht. Horrors. ...;)

So luvers, what do you think? Black and Navy together forever? ...or a total fashion disaster?

Together forever, and never to part...together forever black and navy...
Oh my god you are going to hate me with all my songs!

I love them together when worn with some style, like they meant to, not like they just picked up whatever was on the floor.

Hi, Lakers...

Love the pictures you selected, and speaking as a Catholic school girl myself- I agree that it can be done and look absolutely lovely together.

Now, it can certainly be a mess, too- when you can't tell if something is navy or black and it just looks off- but for the most part I think they make a sophisticated and elegant duo..

Navy nails with a black cocktail dress? Pretty pretty ;)

i'm not a fan, for the simple fact that my father (yes father of all people) said to me like..4 years ago..."you look like a bruise- black and blue."

so now i don't haha.

I'm a big fan of black and navy, especially when you can incorporate some color (white, cream, light green - you make it work)...

And I LOVE the sartorialist!

Undecided myself. In the right situation it could work but ... I'm not sold. Not yet.

I am not a fan of the black & navy together, although those pictures don't look bad! I think it's all in how you present it.

Yes. Together forever (and ever).

Oooh I am all for combining colors in unorthodox or "no-no" combinations! Pink and red, brown and gray, and of course, navy and black! You picked some lovely examples of this done expertly!

A certain tune pops into my head... "me and you, and you and me, no matter how they roll the dice, we're meant to be..." :D I dig, yo.

i like the color combination. it's kind of classic, don't you think?

ps. about the gossip girl episode this week.. i completely agree with you. prom is supposed to be a big deal and yet they only showed us snippets of it. and i think i read somewhere that blair's prom dress is marchesa.

I think they're great together!

P.S. Thanks so much for the html tip. I had no idea my sidebar was all jacked when viewed with firefox. It looked fine with IE which is what I use and I never thought to check, so thanks, problem solved!

It's so funny I was just thinking about this literally a couple of minutes before I saw this post!
My hubby plays football and their off field uniform is a navy blue top with black trousers (it's dresscode regulations). I was thinking about how he looks really smart like that and as I am a member of the football club and wear the shirt also I was wondering whether I would get away with wearing black skinny jeans (instead of my usual dark blue) with my shirt!
After seeing this post I think I will!

I'm kind of against it, although I wear white all year long (almost) and don't really follow 'rules'. I just don't like it. I think it looks like your closet lighting is bad and didn't see what you were putting together?

Thank god we're not longer so rule governed about fashion.

I used to hate the black/navy or black/brown combination until I studied in Italy for a semester in college. Now I think it totally works. And I've been loving navy lately.

I'm a huuuuge fan of black and navy! And brown and black!!! I remember being told years ago that it was fashion no-no...i adore the combos and didn't listen.

Oh gosh. I always manage to wear navy tights with black shoes, thinking that the tights are black. I never realize it until I'm out of the house. It's embarrassing!

Craaaazy color combos make my world go round...I love Navy & black...I think I have always worn it, I love the look- it's so crisp & clean. Another "forbidden" combo I love is brown & black...it's total perfection!

anhesty said...

its ok if worn in style. i still find myself having issues with wearing blue shirts with blue jeans though. what are your thoughts on that?

Aubrey said...

Two of my fave fashion colors...together at last! Or together for now! LOL

Uhmm.. to this day it still makes me cringe my teeth when I see black and navy together.. but I might grow to love it at some point :) Maybe I'm too traditional. hehe.

I never really realized it was supposed to be bad together. Whenever it's cold, I cocoon myself in dark colors to soak up as much heat as possible. Black and navy are my two faves!

Felicia said...

I have NEVER understood why no navy and black together was a rule. Black goes with anything!! (Except dark brown maybe).

LiLu said...

Oh, yes please. That's my favorite combo, I think... next to heather grey and HOT PINK, that is!

I think black and navy are BFFs. I love the way they look together...especially when paired with a simple basic like indigo denim or stripes or a white shirt. loves it.

wearing black and navy together adds dimension and interest. when i was younger it was definitely a no-no, lest people think you were slightly color-blind or got dressed in the dark.
you're right, it looks very fresh. i've been wearing black w/ navy for a couple of years now. i'm hooked.
