This is actually a really easy DIY if you know how to use a sewing machine. Were it not for the blog documentation, it probably would have only taken about 30minutes. If you’re really adventurous, use the sleeves from the t-shirt to make pockets -hidden or just stitched to the front like this American Apparel version. I also thought about using the extra material to create flower details, either around the bottom or just randomly placed …but ultimately kept it simple because it just felt so easy and sporty …but that doesn’t mean I won’t add to it in the future {which is why I save all left-over textiles} just. in. case. 🙂

That is so cute! I wish I knew how to sew. Does your husband care that you keep cutting up his shirts? If not, I say keep stealing them and making different things. All of your jersey stuff has turned out so cute.

This is the first sewing project I ever tried myself. And also the reason why there is a pile of T-shirts in the corner of the living room with ‘someday’ written on a post-it note and slapped on top.

I’ve read like a zillion things trying to explain how to do elastic for a skirt, and your explanation is by far the easiest to follow!! I may have to run out and fetch a sewing machine after this!
Christen
This is genius! I am definitely going to do this as soon as I get my sewing machine back from my mom. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

There’s a no-sew version too. It’s a little less finished looking, but great for wearing around the house. Do the same cut, but instead of hemming it with a new seam, turn it upside down and use the existing hem for the waist. Snip a hole in it and thread the elastic as you describe. Hand sew, tie, or pin the elastic. Closing the snipped hole is optional.
I measured my waist elastic by measuring around my waist with the elastic not-stretched, then fully stretched, then moving about half the distance between those two points, making sure it fit over my hips.
Just found your blog (thru AlreadyPretty) and your ideas are both genius and do-able. Thanks for sharing!

I even modified a little more ad used the “SLEEVES” for pockets for my younger daughters skirt… so now she loves to find garage sales, with… of course.. CLOTHES. in search of t shirts or the goodwill store; AND she is my MINI MARTHA STEWART, she even decided to have me get some longer lace, and we sew THAT along the bottom of the TOP part of the shirt!! no waste here!!
