I used to read a handful of design/decor blogs on a fairly frequent basis {Decorno, MadebyGirl and Coco + Kelley to name a few of my favorites} but found that looking at one fabulous room after another, meticulous landscaped yards and gardens, gorgeous furniture and fixtures, remodeled kitchens and bathrooms, HUGE WALK-IN CLOSETS, I found myself severely depressed afterwards. Why? Because I am hardcore jonesing for a house and not only a house but to decorate a house ...I need space. I need to nest.
Every other day I hear myself saying "uuuuuh, I want a house" ...and really, It's not like we live in a shanty. But for real yo, I'm not about to redecorate my rented condo AGAIN. I just can't. I don't want to put the $$ we have saved for a house into this. I just won't. It's dumb. But oh.my.god. I cannot wait to get my hands on a big open space to decorate ...bedrooms and offices and gardens and patios to arrange and coordinate. OHMYGOD it's seriously driving me insane. And no, I'm not being dramatic.
We have less than a year left here. June 1st. My birthday. We are moving into a house. We are moving into a house or I am going to shoot my head off. We singed the lease for this one last year here {because they lowered the rent} and we're being as smart as we possibly can and saving, saving, saving ...for the house and/or for a bunch of stuff to put in it. And I cannot wait.
I get the hive catalog now because I ordered the Eames House Bird last August which is wrapped up and stored with many other works of art and just general awesomeness I've been slowly collecting the past couple years for our future house. Our future house that last August I was pretty positive I'd be in by now. But you know, the economy and such. Whatever economy. You can suck it. And ya know what? LA real estate can suck it too! I mean, we could flat out buy a house in another state ...and NOT HAVE A MORTGAGE!!!
So ...I got the hive catalogue in the mail today and flipping through it found the amazing Kennedee Sofa ...and it stopped me dead in my tracks. Now, I've seen this couch numerous times in decor magazines and subsequently drooled over it. But today, I dunno. Today it just looked so good I wanted to layer it with pillows and put my body all over it. Look how deep and long it is!! {um, yeah, I said it}
And then I looked at the price. And I knew I'd be in for some hefty zeros but I wasn't prepared for the $20,600 + shipping {it actually says that} tag it came with. And you know what my first thought was? I bet I could get that couch custom built for less than half that. Now, it would still be expensive but FAR more reasonable ...and custom ...and unique ...and you know I love that. {if I could find it vintage, I would ...but it was made in 2006}
Since we've been in this condo {over 5 years now} we {and by WE I clearly mean, my husband} have been putting $20-$40 a week into an envelope called "COUCH" ...and in another one called "BED" ...and so on ..and so forth. And you know what? It adds up ...after five years, it adds up quite nicely. So when the time comes ...NEXT SUMMER ...when we finally buy our house - we're gonna get whatever the fuck couch I want! ...within reason, of course. ...because my husband was so very responsible with our money ;)
Thanks baby!

Wauw! That sofa is so nice :o!
That sofa is awesome, love the black version! White gets dirty so fast.
X, fashion-nerdic.
It looks really confortable!
Zepequeña.
$20,600 for a couch? Is it a Jetson couch? When you lay down does coutour to the shape of your body?
Does it automatically know that you want to turn over and little hands come out of the cushions to turn you on your side?
That amount will single handedly get me out debt!
I say, when it's time to get a couch...grab your husband's envelope and get whatever that envelope can buy!
....cute couch though..he he he!
Mozy on over to my blog and help me choose a dress for a wedding!! I can't decide!
I've never had more trouble shopping for a piece of furniture than a couch.
I will say that leather couches (last pic) are durable but not very comfortable.
Good luck with the house hunting.
that couch is divine! In both colors!!!
NICE!
Have a great weekend!

I know what you mean about not being able to bear looking at those design sites because everyone has a gorgeous house and space to decorate. I have a house but I'm totally demoralized by all the gorgeousness I see. I still read them though. Call me a masochist.
That is one gorgeous couch, but $20,000 is a lot of money for furniture! {Even if it is really.really gorgeous furniture.}
You should check out the online store Room Service (if you haven't already). They have a lot of tufted sofas and sectionals in different fabrics. They aren't inexpensive, but I believe they're in your neck of the woods, and none of their sofas get into the five-figure range!
Have a wonderful weekend and happy house dreaming!!
Holy shit that's a lot of money for a couch, I could never do it because mine end up with too much dog hair. I am embarrassed to admit that I was pretty tickled knowing we have the same birthday! my crush is just a wee little one...just a tiny one... ;)
I'm dying for a house too!! It kills me that I'm not about to paint/wallpaper my walls!!!
Uuuuuuhhhh, that couch is nothing but deelish sexiness - I'd roll myself all over it, too, hells yeah! :)
Omg, I'm so excited for your new crib, too... and sexy couch... and huge ass bed (dude, someday, a huge ass comfy bed with TONS of down & feather shit is MINE)... go, Maegan, GO!!!
Cool looking couch, but i'm not sure it would be all that comfortable. I definetly think you could find something just like it or better for half the price. the other half of the money could go towards window treatments and recreation stuff, like that 60" HDTV.
Whats up with the Chinese spam, i get it every night on the same thread
btw, your new banner and especially the graphic font is very nice. Like it a lot.
how sweet. and what a great way to save money!
Love the couch. Hope you get it, one way or another! We just got kittens, so i'm working out ways to save it! xx
Love the black couch! I am excited to see how you decorate your house when you move in!

Go for it. It will be more than just a "couch," it will be a place where you live and love!!!! thanks for the sugar;)
wow, what a great idea to save money!
have a lovely weekend, xoxo
nice couches granted their not my style but if someone had them in their house i would have to compliment. An i know what you mean about the leasing/renting thing when it isn't really yours you just don't want to put the money into b/c then you feel like your wasting so much money on something you don't even get a return on .
this couch is simple yet looks really comfortable! Love your blog Maegan, you're a great inspiration :)
Omg I freaking love that couch!!! Its so chic!

soo perfect!! but why does all the best furniture have to be so expensive??!!
xx

i don't think i would ever leave home if i had this rad couch! or one like it!
Love the style, but I'd totally rather find a nice mid-century modern equivalent, and re-upholster it!
I only really say that because I'm totally into purple leather right now, and could NOT spend that kind of cash! haha!
i love the lil envelopes with your desired item on them! such discipline!
I have to say...owning is over rated and total liability.
Once you get that "house" it will be one big money pit of property taxes and pot holes, and plumbing issues, that sofa will be an after thought.
Treat your Self to the best sooner rather than later. In the mean while, "Bloom where you are planted".
Make the sofa a flexible sectional, and the dining chairs stack-able, and still stick with your sleek and sexy aesthetic.
Collect the pieces you love, and they will love you forever, where ever you dwell.
Be well.
Gorg couch! I bought a couch (and armchair) last year in our apt and it was so HUGE in the apt, I thought I was nuts for getting it. Move to the house, the couch is the perfect size/fit and we should have gotten the loveseat too, but that never would have fit into the apt.
Furniture is tricky like that. I hope you find your perfect house next spring!
When we finally closed on our house here in El Paso...I did a cartwheel in the living room! I was incredibly happy. Your day will come chica!
I get you completely.
When my H and I got married we bought a little apartment in the city (90 square feet).
It was a tiny two bedroom that we took forever to decorate, but it was so much fun!
Your time will come :)
Just one little word of advise if I may, invest in furniture that you can move around to take different shapes - sectionals ?- so you don't get bored !
As you will be looking at them for a while :)
Wow! I love this couch... but not the price tag! I'm sure you'll do an amazing job decorating seeing as how creative you are!

"whatever the fuck couch I want" - that is so awesome. and you should do it! we had my husband's black leather couch for years until we finally bought a new one last year. he had it for about 4 yrs before we met and we've been together for 8 years...the freaking couch was the last bit of his bachelorhood and it was time to go but you know, 8 milion things got in the way and were more important. until last winter...I finally had it and I said, we might move next year, we might move in 5 years, we might not ever move, we might do this, that and the other thing...I'm not waiting to see what happens next before we buy ourselves a new freaking couch that is the center of our home and that we use every single day. so, no. you're not being dramatic. you are being normal. if/when we move, and we have a bigg space (here's hoping) our beautiful *new* couch can go in a second bedroom or an office or where the fuck ever it will fit if we decide to buy a *new* *new* couch and that's all there is to it. :)
in love wit the black couch
Happily, I have this sofa in the 3 seat version (black heritage leather) and feel compelled to respond as the comments here have been so positive. This sofa seems to polarize people and more often than not the comments are negative.
Some points of note:
I had some issues with placement of the feet and Poltrona Frau bent over backwards to resolve my issue and make me happy. PF was a pleasure to work with.
My wife and I waited until our children were 11 - 9 before investing in such a piece and even at that age they constantly accuse us of only having "museum" furniture. We cringe when their friends come over or family visit with small children. Factor in such user types when you make the plunge.
I must say - while this sofa is absolutely beautiful to look at, it's uncomfortable as hell to sit on in a traditional, forward facing manner. It is not suitable for watching an NFL double header or 3 hour movie. Even with the shorter seat width option, you need to be about 6'5" to sit with your knees able to naturally brake over the cushion edge. That said, it shines when you want to sit and face someone else in conversation - prop one arm up on the back rest and swing your legs up on the bench and it becomes the king of lounge/conversation seating.
Lastly, the options for configuring sectional components for this seating is extensive, e.g., you could put a right handed arm seat section next to a flat ended bench section. While the configuration shown is $20K+, you could easily do a 2 seat for ~$8k and build on to it in the future.
Good luck with your selection! It is so rewarding to plot, plan and save and finally make it a reality.
