A Peek Inside My Closet

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS MY OLD CLOSET

my-closet-1

Welcome to my closet. It sucks. Okay, it doesn't suck but it could be better. I'm making due {do?} and using every nook and cranny I can to organize and fit my wardrobe/collection into. I really wanted to avoid the whole closet post until I actually had my dream closet but have received so many emails asking to see it I thought I might as well.

. . . and running out of room, I recently added this

my-closet-2dark

...which originally was going to be an actual piece of furniture. But since we are moving in June I figured it would just be one more thing to move that wasn't going to fit in with the new decor of our fabulous new house. So a few weekends ago I found this free standing storage closet ...for $19.99 which will be brilliant for storage in the future. I chose the plastic covering over no covering for two reasons 1. I wanted to hide the clutter 2. I wanted to prevent dust as this was going to be the place where I stored the more special pieces in my wardrobe.

...and it actually works quite well

my-closet-14

I've used this Burberry box from my trench to store all of my favorite little purses and clutches in and slide it right under the storage unit

my-closet-10

my-closet-4

My favorite hangers are the crystal cut plastic {I have a few pink vintage ones from my grandma}, the slim flocked hangers and the wood clip hangers for skirts and pants ...although they take up too much room, they are the sturdiest and I can hang a few pairs on one.

my-closet-11

This tall and narrow dresser from Ikea holds my underwear, bras, socks, bathing suits & lingerie

my-closet-8

I save most shoe boxes and stack them up. I love the Velvet Angels boxes because the slide out like drawers. Behind all the hanging clothes though, there are more shoes ...hidden. They are shoes that I don't necessarily wear right now but are still "keepers" so they can sit in the back quietly out of the way. Behind this stack of boxes is a shoe shelf on the ground like the one above.

my-closet-12

Using a version of this over the door hook system, I hang all sweatshirts/hoodies. Confession: I own quite a few Juicy sweat suits ...none of which I wear out of the house any more but they are the comfiest and last the longest.

my-closet-3

I also use a few over the door hooks on the back of the bedroom door for my scarves, pashminas, and cardigans. Not to mention the three dressers full of clothes and accessories that you can't see. Or the plastic bins in our storage shed on the patio full of more clothes, shoes and bags. And let me tell you, there is STILL NOT ENOUGH SPACE. ...but some day. SOME DAY! {raises fist in the air}

I hope you're happy now ;)

Color me impressed...my favorite part? You hang your bras on your doorknob like I do. I have a drawer for mine, but by the end of the week they're hanging off my closet and bedroom doorknobs :)

At least you are organized, my closet is a mess! I was so stoked when we bought our house because of all the closet space. paaawhaaaaaaaaaw! Now I have rolling racks and am invading the would be nursery. It makes me way unhappy to be so disorganized.

My closet is SO pathetic. I, too, dream of an amazing, organized closet... SIGH...

That is one hell of a clothing collection. But I have the same predicament that there is never enough space, but one day I will get that perfect walk-in wardrobe room and all will be well, and fit in!!

Umm, wow! Your closet definitely does NOT suck! You just inspired me to take better care of my clothes:)

Thanks for letting us take a peak into your closet. Looks like yours is stuffed with lots of fabulous goodies.

I think every girl dreams of the perfect closet. The one where everything is perfectly organized and all the clothes are neatly arranged. A beautiful oasis that seems like a department store. A girl can dream. =)

What a happy closet, even if it is a little bit of chaos and not perfect - I think clothes like it better that way sometimes... they can become more inspirational for you! :)

At least you have everything where you know where it is! I try to cram everything into my closet and I lose half the stuff I put in there...plus I have to share with the hubby! poor guy!

WOW you are inspiring - SO much more organized than me! *cries* I get dressed in the dark these days it seems...can't find anything (I'm currently between houses) and I can't change anything regardless.

Hey, I did a post you might enjoy...all about the 90's alt scene lol.

My husband and I are huge clothes horses, and we love outerwear most so it takes up a lot of space. When we first moved into our apartment, I was so happy when I saw the walk-in-closet. But after almost two years of being here-it's turned into sort of just a step-in-closet. Lol. We have so much stuff. And even, like you, have had to buy a separate rack for him to hang some of his stuff. And it's taking up a huge chunk of space in our bedroom. It's awful. I need like a whole 'nother bedroom to hold my clothes!

p.s. I don't think you're out of control, I think you're just getting started - am I right?!

For your organizational skills alone you deserve a bigger closet!

I love this post....especially the "raises fist in air" part! HI-5!!!you will have your dream soon, so soon! you're on your way there...it's just days away ;)

that dresser from Ikea....I had it {and the whole matching set} in my dorm room...I LOVED it.

I think you have done an amazing job with the space you have, it looks fantastic, and I dont think it looks that small at all.

Hope you are feeling better :)

Oh, my GOSH!!! Do you KNOW how LONG I've been WAITING for you to POST THIS??!!!? Thank you. I have a closet post I've been wanting to do, but haven't gotten around to. HowEVer, I've always wanted to know this from girls like you that do this sort of thing. If all your shoes are in boxes, how do you decide what to wear? I have to actually SEE them before me! And, getting them out of the boxes to try on different ones with an outfit seems time consuming. Then I don't put them BACK. Then I'm taking up more ROOM. It's a never-ending cycle.

Okay. This comment is way too long. I'll get around to my quasi-closet post someday.

With such a limited space, I believe you have done a great job organizing it. Seriously, I'm impressed - I definitely need to learn from this :)

I love this post!

Wow, I just made myself swoon!

I still think you're hiding clothes somewhere, haha. How can you possibly fit all of the stuff that you wear into those small places?

It is actually wonderful to see a REAL closet. Sometimes you think that your closet has to be perfect in order to achieve those perfect looks too. Love it.

I realize this post is supposed to be about your closet, but at first I got distracted by the super cool leopard print folding chair.

And then in the later photos, I got distracted by the Louis Vuitton...

... and then FINALLY I focused on everything else to see that you have a crazy amazing amount of cool stuff!!

wow, you've done so much with what looks to be not-that-much space! have you gotten that stand-alone $19.99 closet to actually stand? i've purchased several and they all start swaying to one side right away (probably due to my over-stuffing of them in every way, of course). i've got most things on metal salesman's racks now... i love that you keep the boxes and bags for everything!

Jill said...

I don't think there is ever enough space. I think you've seen pics of my closet on our last Mexico trip. It's ridiculous. I keep telling myself I'm going to clear it out, but the job seems so overwhelming to me...I never do it. You have inspired me though. I have some built-in shelves that I store all of my tennis clothes, bags, and nightgowns. I'm going to steal the boot box idea to store my clutches. This will free up quite a lot of space...thanks for that!!

How can you think that this is an organized closet????? IT is one of the most disorganized ones I have ever seen!!!!! I have even more clothes than you but what I did was simply convert one of the extra bedrooms in the house to a closet and that is super nice and organized. Unlike your jumbled mess!

My mother in law put me down with a great idea for storage. You can buy a cheap book case, say from Walmart and use the shelves for storage of shoes, scarves, etc. She even painted hers white. I found it helpful for shoe storage because my closet is almost no- existant.

I've recently become home bound with my newborn and I've been browsing your blog almost nonstop for two days now. I got so inspired and with my boredom (as I've said home bound) I've started piecing together my clothes into actual outfits. It is otherwise, thrown on haphazardly. It's like shopping in my closet again. I can't wait to wear them.
