I hate clutter. Once I decorate a room, I want it to stay that way ...but inevitably, and over time especially, it becomes filled with all the little things you have no other place for. And on a daily basis, a safe place to toss your keys, phones, wallets, sunglasses, and of course, biodegradable doggie poop bags is always essential. My solution to this problem {as well as a solution to lost keys} is the plastic over the door shoe holder {$14.99 @ Bed Bath & Beyond $9.29 @ Amazon} on the inside of our entry-way coat closet.
The original idea came from my previous {and ridiculously small} kitchen in our old condo which had no drawers for silverware and just enough cupboard space for food. I used our hall closet for all of our dishes and on the inner door, used the shoe organizer for silverware. In all actuality, the idea for a home for our odds n' ends came this time from my husband ...who immediately said, "Why don't we just use the old silverware shoe thing?" ...brilliant.

I love the plastic because, clearly, it allows you to see what's inside every pocket.
And when the door's closed . . .

An easy and affordable storage solution! {and if you don't have an entry-way closet, you could easily just hang it over the back of your front door}

I have a mini-rack for my jewelry on the back of my closet door. Looks great, and as soon as you open your closet it's all there to see :)
Love it!
I've been trying to think of a better way to store my sunglasses... What a great idea!

great Idea and it could work for so many things

What a great idea! We have such a big problem with clutter in our home. :-/
It's perfect for this! We recently did this with the kids' art supplies (http://www.twitpic.com/1atotx) and it's helped so much with keeping things tidy and organized. Might have to get another for keys, glasses and such. Great idea!
Great idea! Will implement it for sure! :)

PURE GENIUS!!!!
Super amazing idea! Thank you!!!
I should do this for my jewelry because it would keep things out of the reach of my children's hands for the most part. Great idea!
Great idea, I have limited space so will definately be buying one of those! Thanks X.
Okay seriously! This is SO SMART! I love this idea, Meagan, THANK YOU for suggesting it! I unfortunately don't have a door like that for my front hall closet (they are large sliders instead) but can envision this working with my linen closet or something! Love it! Thanks!

I'm stealing this idea. I LOVE it. My kitchen is the size of a closet... :-/
I like this idea, but none of our doors in the house are swing out kind. They're like the collapsing ones that collapse open. It's really annoying.
This is a really smart idea.
XOXs,
Maeko, thereafterish.
Hi Meagan! I have been following your blog for a while, I just did an outfit post you inspired ! I adore your DIY's ! So clever as I am too a clutter monster. I hope you are feeling well (from a very long ago post ;) Thanks for inspiring me !
i love your blog!!
kisses
I hate clutter, too. I'm always telling my husband I'm a mess on the inside so I can't be a mess on the outside!
Perfect idea. You have saved my sanity.
ooh that is a great idea! i have a walk in that's bursting already, and it's only been a month since i moved in... need more tips like this for sure!
You are one resourceful, SMART and beautiful girl !

FUCKING BRILLIANT!!! pure genius! i have to remember to do this!!! MUST DO IT!!
Thanks so much for this great idea! We also just moved and I have one of these from our old place that I'm going to repurpose for this. (Also, your carpet remnant hookup is on my list of places to look for a shag rug for our new place.)
Love this idea;)
I follow♥
This is amazing, i mean i never tought put this in my door or something like that, thanks for the tip, xoxo
That is one hot pug!
There is nothing in the world more satisfying than neat and tidy storage solutions. And little bits-n-pieces like these are so hard to store!
I'd love it if you could show us how you store your handbags. I really struggle with that. xx
What a great idea! So neat and tidy. And what an adorable little pug! Gorgeous thing.
What a fabulous idea!! I have drawers all over my freakin house with random stuff!
How neat! i absolutely hate clutter too.
Just letting you know that i'm hosting a giveaway at my blog, would love for you to enter: http://trishiekoh.blogspot.com/2010/03/picos-skirt-giveaway.html
that's an awesome idea! it would work in so many rooms too. on the back of a pantry door for spices and baking stuff...storing arts and crafts supplies...holding toys if you have kids...even mitts and hats for the winter. i bet the dollar store has this type of thing for even cheaper. i'll definitely look for one!
This is so genius, I literally smacked myself in the forehead when I saw it. FAB.
I have these on a few doors in my house. Love them. I especially love the one I have in my bathroom for hair and beauty product storage. Its on the door of my water closet. And its a little better than the standard shoe organizer because its mesh. And it has 48 pockets (they're double pockets) so it holds big and little stuff. And it goes all the way to the bottom of the door with clips that you slip under the door so that it doesn't slide around as you open and shut it. I bought it at Walmart. I think its my favorite purchase in months! I was able to take all of my bathroom counter clutter and organize it neatly! Love!
ahh! i do this in my bathroom (there is no storage space at all!) with a canvas shoe holder though - love it :)
Whoa, you had a REALLY small kitchen. Very similar in size, actually, to my own kitchen, but thankfully I have a few more drawers than you did.
I love this idea for a small space. I might just have to cop it for myself.
I want this, no, I need it!
Great idea! Thanks for sharing it with us.
I wish I could do this but every single closet door in my apt is one of those that open like an accordian. It's not that offensive bc it just has two panels and they are wood but with space being a premium in NYC it's easier to have door that open that way and if you leave them open they don't take up as much space. sigh...fabulous idea!
Super creative idea Maeg, extremely useful -- I'll have a million +1 shades at my fingertips in no time :]
How in the hell did I miss this post? Good thing I surf blogs at work or I would have never thought of this!
I know I'm late to this post but I'm browsing past post I've gotten around too. :) I love this idea as well. Just a thought though. I have used these on the inside of my kids closet doors for a couple years now. I personally don't like that way the over the door hooks look at the top of the door when you close it. Hammering a few small nais directly into the inside top of the door to hang the organizer on makes the outside of the door look cleaner. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist, but it's just a thought. :)

Absolutely brilliant! I saw this once on a magazine long time ago and been wanting to get one. Really neat! Thanks for sharing!
Love the idea. I need it for my new house!! Post more please!!!
Great idea! Will implement it for sure! :)
