* Faux Bob Hair Tutorial *

CLICK HERE for my vimeo page it looks a little better there.

Disclaimer #1: I start off slow, lol, it's been a while since I've done a hair-to. Disclaimer #2: I'm pretty sure I left in a few bits that should have been saved for an outtakes video but they made me laugh so ....whatevs. Enjoy.

One of my absolute favorite hairstyles is the messy/loosely curled, just above shoulder length, bob. It reminds me of Cybill Shepherd from the 80's, specifically in one of my favorite movies Chances Arechances are, bobbed hair, faux bob. {It also reminds me of my mom :} And every time I grow my hair out I want to chop it off into a one-length bob {and have more than once actually - see here} But now, in my 30's, I sort of enjoy my long hair as it can be used to hide thy face ;) But this faux bob was so ridiculously easy it made me wonder why on earth I never tried it before.

Tools I used: hot rollers, Large Bobby Pinsfor the main hold & a few Small Bobby Pinsfor loose ends, a skinny ponytail holder, Bed Head BIGGIE hair spray

There's something about this vintage dress that just makes me feel Italian when I wear it ...I dunno why, I've never been to Italy, but it does. And the hair, I think helps, but also I think it adds an old Hollywood glamour-y touch that is just so fun. I love the idea of getting this look without having to chop all my hair off.

When I finished my hair/the video and walked out of the bathroom and into the living room where my husband was, he looked at me, tilted his head to the side and said "Your hair is SHORT ...and BIG" ...to which I responded "GOOD ...that's what I was going for" ...and then he got that look in his eye which assured me he liked it ;).

And just in case you're wondering ;) I'm wearing a vintage floral print dress I've literally had for over ten years & purchased for under $5 {seen once in an outfit post here}, gold Rachel Roy drop earrings, gilded gold vintage necklace which was my grandma's and Christian Louboutin's that are so ridiculously high I can only use/wear them in at-home photo shoots.

* And yes, I teased you on Sunday ...but you are all so smart, you knew I was bluffing ;)

{how many winky faces do you think I've used in this post. jeeeeeezus}

Pretty dang brilliant, Maegan! I love the big hair and the bombshell style of it all. I would watch the video, but I'm still at work, and they frown on that hear. :(

You look lovely, and I can only wait for the day I have the time and energy to muster doing this for myself.

Also - you have beautiful hair! So jealous! My hair is so fine... was totally envious of how easily your hair held curl - I am for sure going to try the Bed Head hair spray!

Amazing dress. Amazing hair! This is a GORGEOUS look on you.

Naaaaa, you already wrote that your hairstylist refused to cut it off, so I guess I'm smart cause I did not think: OMG she chopped off her hair... anyways, it was really funny to watch.

seriously I adore you! Your video made me laugh-especially when you said it needs to be tight, (that's what he said)! I totally thought that in my head before you said it! Too funny-guess that means we're both 12.

Adore the hair- might try to do this- although I might have to kiss my fingers goodbye since it seemed like you burnt yours a lot.

Great dress- and I hope you didn't pay a lot for the CL since you can't wear them out much.

Love your blog!

Okay Maegan,

DO MORE VIDEO BLOGS!! You have a very witty writing style, but seeing your thoughts "unprocessed" and raw was absolutely cracking me up! You seem so fun and the videos make me want to hang out with you, hahah!

But I LOVE your hair like that! Mine is a little shorter so I can probably make the bob without tucking it under... I can't wait to try soon! Thanks for the tute!

LOVE this look. You look like a sex bomb out of a Fellini film. And those shoes. I can't believe you only rock those in photo shoots -- they are SO fab.

First of all, You are crazy!

Secondly, I clearly have an afro but I watched this hair tutorial so I can tell the Chinese lady at the hair shop in the hood how many inches of hair I need to achieve the length of your real hair.

I'm thinking maybe 14 inches should be good. Ah forget it, they'll tell me. They always do!

Catherine Tang said...

Your hair is gorgeous! Wish I had long, voluminous hair. Great video!

Rachel said...

Maegan, I had a crappy day and this just made it all better! You've got the best attitude, being able to laugh at yourself is a great quality, I've got to remember to do that too! I can't wait to try it. Keep the hair tutorials coming!!!

Mara said...

you are so cute! Watching this video you had me laughing and smiling. And omg I can't believe how easy it looks! I'm going to have to get some hot rollers for some of that crazy curl. I have thick hair too and it always takes waaay too long with a curling iron.

Anonymous said...

you inspired me! i have long, curly red hair and never want to cut it, because, obviously, it's very nice when it's long. But i've had the same hairstyle since I was a kid. This is a very welcome change.
As a naturally curly haired gal, it literaly took me two minutes to do his, since I did not need any hot rollers. like your blog btw!

That was such a hilarious video. I have super thick hair and I never thought of putting it in a pony when I did it- that's so smart... it sucks trying to pin super long thick hair up. I was cracking up the whole time... "It just can't be this easy?!" hahaha

Great Video! I love that you did your hair like that for the first time, so it's like we're learning right along with you!

I didn't really know quite what to think when I first stumbled upon your site. My hair and face are so unmanageable I've accidently turned into one of those girls who hates anyone who can!

But you really are a lovely, wonderful person! Thank you providing such good, honest advice, you've restored my faith in hairspray :)

Take care x

Awesome!! The video is hilarious so glad you kept all the un-professional parts in as you said in the video, I loved it I was just looking for a tutorial on how to get my hair sorta like this yesterday. Although I already have short hair this was still cool and very helpful. I need to get some of those hot rollers though they look awesome.

Great Tutorial Maegan!! Thanks for the awesome idea.

Love, love, love it.... seriously, this is great and not something I would have thought of on my own. It's funny, I have long hair too and really considered getting a drastic cut because sometimes I just want it OFF the neck but not in a ponytail-- this is my answer! Thanks for the great ideas as usual! :)

I tried this today and love it!! The best part it, my hair would never look this good if I actually cut it. This way, I get a totally new style AND a ton of body. Which, is like, my favorite thing. :)

Hi Maegan,

Your tutorials are great! Can you please tell me what type of hot rollers you have? They look just like an old school set my friend has, which she stole from her mom who had them forever. I can't find the type of rollers that have spikes like that anywhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Ivana
