Sometimes a cheap Halloween wig works and sometimes it doesn’t. And sometimes you just need some extra oomph in your own hair by adding extensions vs wearing an entire wig… which is what I needed but didn’t want to spend a fortune on real extensions for a costume. So I got busy tearing up a cheap wig I already had and it was a simple task creating extensions and I’ll show you how to do it too.
What You’ll Need…

* A Cheap Halloween Wig
* Large & Small Wig Clipswhich you can find at your local beauty supply in a few different colors
* Variety of other hair pins/clips &/or small Bobby Pins
* Small scissors
* Needle & Thread
Steps…

* Using your small and large wig clips, measure the section of hair to cover it and snip the section off. If you would like it thicker, you can double the hair by folding it over.

* And using your needle and thread, stitch the hair strip onto your wig clips using the holes on the tops and side of the large clips…

* …and onto/through the open sections of the small clips.

* I wanted a few tiny strips just in case I needed to cover any front clipped in sections so I took a small section of hair, stitched it in a circle …

* …then stitched it onto the end of the bobby pins.

* I created a few longer panels that were doubled in thickness but cutting out two rows of mesh together…

* …and stitched on 4 large wig clips for a large extension to wear on the back of my head

* I also left a few chunks/strips of hair without clips, thinking I could just pin them in/on/over the clipped in strips. I still have a huge amount of wig hair left in case I need a few more pieces. This is an easy DIY, btw.

You can see how I wore them below…

how fun!
and that is a hilarious story about your natural hair being mistaken for a wig!

It might not hurt to seal the weft area with some clear nail polish or fray check to help prevent shedding. I used to wear extensions and this helps alot!

Your hair is gorgeous! It doesn’t look wig like at all!!!
Anyways, the hair clip idea is great…never though of taking a wig apart before!
Great post

If someone thought your actual hair was a wig, it just means your hair is so thick that it looks fake. I would LOVE to have that problem. Anyhoo, can’t wait to see these in!

Thanks! I’m going to do this with some real hair extensions and make me some clip in hair when I want to have longer hair. Clip in extensions can be expensive, so why not make your own, it’s a lot cheaper.

Great inexpensive Halloween DIY! Great minds think alike, I just did a tutorial on how to get a customized salon look colour on human hair extensions and am loving playing with my new locks as I missed my long hair so!

The nerve of that woman, pulling your hair! If it had been a wig, would she have pulled it off of your head? wtf?

Sorry, this is off the subject, but….did the very talented Natalie ever become your step mother-in-law? If so I’ll bet family functions are a hoot around your house 🙂

I love your DIY projects and this one is fabulous, especially for Halloween! =) I’m gonna have to try it out since I just got a haircut and it’s super short. So extensions might be fun for a day of long luscious locks.

Oh my gosh, that’s so creative! I too have had the “yarmulke” action going on when I buy most wigs…it’s funny that the shape of the crown is always a dead giveaway to their wigginess…what an ingenious solution! I have a ton of those clip-in hair extensions I bought in Japan and they’re sooooo realistic – but I can’t find any in the US for less than $80! What a great idea – Maegan, you are a goddess! Can’t wait to see you try them out…:-) (Does that sound creepy??;-)

Your idea is way better than just popping on a wig, BUT for folks who are disappointed in their Halloween wig’s fit, (because they won’t let you try them on in the store) try wetting it (like, soak it) and hang it up as best as possible or just lay it flat over night. Yep, even if it is a curly wig (or a really cheap one), it should pop right back into place and look like the picture on the packaging.

Very very smart thank u 🙂

Thank you so much for this post! I was Cruella de Vil for Halloween and used your method to create white hair pieces to wear on one side of my head so that I didn’t have to wear a full wig (my hair is already black).
