How to Curl your Hair with Hot Rollers

Ask and you shall receive ;) ...this is how I get big bouncy curls using hot rollers. {I showed you a bit of this process in my Faux Bob Hair-To} *Disclaimer #1: the camera cuts off my hand curling the first two on top but the rest are visible. Apologies. Disclaimer #2: YouTube only gives me 10 minutes, so I start skipping around a bit at the end. Disclaimer #3: if I knew my shower door was in the shot, I would have maybe moved that towel and/or folded it nicely. omg. Alright, enjoy.

Surprisingly easy, curling your hair with hot rollers gives it the perfect volume and texture to make any great holiday style a piece of cake! Or, just leave your curls long and bouncy.

hair curled with hot rollers - brushed out+waves

I have to admit that while I do really love the color tones in my hair ...I'm not particularly happy with the stripey look that's goin' on here. I mean, if I wanted my hair to look like I did it ...I would have done it myself - for about $180 less than I paid. Just sayin' ...I'm probably going to have it redone. I mean, I specifically told her "no stripes". blerg

Aah, I miss seeing those big rollers, in their carry case...and that toasted smell, from my Mama's days.

I need some of my own now, too.

Cheers!

I love the red highlights!! So cute. And red washes out so just wait a month and it will look different.

I wish my hair looked like that when I hot roll it. I think it's b/c I have more layers in my hair. It just gets tooooo big and bushy. :-)

LOVE your tutorials (and your DIY's and your outfits, and your home and your EVERYTHING) LOL! Great information, I think I am going to give hot rollers a try!

Oh sheesh - I could've used this on Saturday. I used hot rollers for the first time in about TWENTY FRIGGING YEARS, and seriously kept thinking - DAYUM, I wish Love Maegan had a tutorial. Going to watch this at home tonight and practice.

You must have reeeallly long hurr, because my hurr is pretty long, and it felt so much shorter all curled up.

Have a good one, mamacita!
Merci,
Shannan

Hi Maegan -- I'm a new reader to your blog. The video tutorial is really great! I actually have rollers like yours, but haven't used them in years. Maybe I'll have to try them out again soon. Thanks!

Thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to give it a go! Though I'm not sure how long these curls will stay in my very fine hair. xo

awesome!!! my mom has a old scool hot roller set just like that! I'll dig them out, this looks fun! :D

I love this tutorial! I love hot rollers and for some reason when I moved got rid of mine and now it is all i want again. Great idea about brushing it out for the more "hollywood glamour" look. Thanks!

the 'stripes' dont look terrible. they actually look good. you can rock anything. and your curls look salon styled. i can't do that.

Alyssa Mae said...

My mom has those! I'm going over tonight for sure to get them! This is great!

Cara said...

Love the video, Thanks! What products are you using on your hair right now??

Kat said...

I totally understand the horror of receiving hair that's not at all what you described.

I once went in for AUBURN highlights and came out with chunky blonde highlights... I had my natural dark brown hair color at the time... blurg!

You can rock it though!

I WOULD DIE WITHOUT MY HOTROLLERS! I would have to say that I think it works great on day old hair and I have pretty thin hair. IDK, maybe it is just me. The middle start with the twist is the secret, for sure!

I need those rollers... NOTHING WORKS on my thick-as-fog hair!

i love the old hollywood glamour look! so good on you!
:)

I miss my hot rollers... now i think it's time to get them now that my hair is growing back...

love the highlights - did you put any product in your hair as you were drying it? my fine hair doesn't keep curl very well unless I use enough mousse to cover EVERY TINY strand.

I don't comment on here very often, but am a loyal reader. Thanks for the tutorial. It shows me how truly easy and fast it is to have glam hair everyday. I have no excuse now!

luckylass said...

oh and agreed for that cost, you should have EXACTLY what you asked for!

hey.. as a hairstylist. i feel the need to tell you: not to go back to the same stylist that gave you fatty stripes towards the back of your crown when you asked her not to. Not ok. Honestly the fact that the lowlights around your face are so much thinner leads me to belive that the stylist took the lazy route instead of doing what you asked. Professionally speaking, you should ask to have her fix the prob free of charge. I realize not everyone jumps at the disappointment of a customer but a great stylist will. Regardless, You go gurl! Work that multi-tonal do! HaHa.bestwishes.

HOLY HUNDRED and EIGHTY DOLLARS! Tell your stylist wtf?!?!?! If you specifically asked for something and you didnt get it you should be able to GET WHAT YOU WANT, specially for that price.... however your hair looks gorgeous curly like that... and I am loving the black longsleeved dress your wearing... please tell me it's affordable and by who?

If you're looking for hair stylist recommendations...
I don't know how close you are to Encino, but I love my stylist at Floyd's Barbershop. Yes, it's a barbershop, but Jana does an amazing job on cuts and color for me. I actually followed her from an Aveda to Floyd's. http://www.floydsbarbershop.com/index.php/people/bio/4582

I tried this last night (my curlers are the same brand but from the 80's) and I always get really wacky results. My hair is to the length of my shoulder blades and I curled it the same way you did. It usually just looks like a big pouf ball and yesterday was no different. Boo to my hair for not cooperating :(

who dislikes a simple (and helpful ;)) hair roller tutorial anyway?!

feelin you on the hair stripes. had my hair dyed that color once and it eventually turned into a pretty coppery then gold - loved it. red fades super fast unless you use shampoo for reds.

i stick to boxed dye kits now though.

Regardless of how your hair colour turned out, this tutorial is amazing! Your hair is unreal, ugh, makes me sick, it's sooo nice!!!

THis is very helpful as I got hot rollers almost a year ago and have used them maybe 5 times - I have a new attitude to try 'em again and make it work this time! :D

THANK YOU!

I love your hair tutorials. I am going out and buying hot rollers tomorrow!

I'm a stylist as well, and if you told her no stripes and she did that, it is UNACCEPTABLE. I hate lazy stylists, for that amount of money, she needs to fix it or refund you so someone else can fix it.

Stephanie J. said...

Maegan thanks so much for this! My hair is as long as yours and I haven't ever had good success with my hot rollers. I'm thinking it's because I would start at the ends instead of the middle. Can't wait to try this out over the holiday weekend!

Hi there! I have been admiring your hair for a while now and have been spending the last 8 months growing out a pixie cut. It's finally back to a length that I am comfortable with (after months of looking like Justin Bieber) and I would LOVE to eventually have long, luscious hair like yours. My hair is naturally thick and a little coarse, with big waves that begin at my temple. I was wondering what your natural hair texture is and if it is similar to mine at all.

Thanks!

You have really pretty hair...looove it! I use hot rollers all the time but learned something new while watching your video. I will definitely let them fall the next time I take them out. A little trick I know is, when they are so hot they burn your scalp, take a little piece of toilet paper and slide it in betweem your roller and the your scalp.. works like a charm!
