Sequined Fanny Pack: So Wrong it’s Right

santa monica, Los Angeles

What I’m Wearing
* Vintage patchwork leather jacket …tags are all cut out, in fact, this thing is so ancient, most of the lining is ripping out around the armholes. But I so love it. I found it at a thrift shop probably over ten years ago and have worn it off and on ever since. It was one of those special finds because it fit soooooo perfectly it could have been made for me. I mean look at the sleeve length! It’s so rare to find a vintage coat or jacket with sleeves that hang all the way to my wrists, let alone below them. While patchwork comes and goes, as do leathers in general, this is still one of my all-time favorite finds …that always seems to come back in style. I wore it once in a Lookbook from January 2009 wow …really, 2 years ago? sheesh!
* White fleece sweatshirt from Victoria’s Secret worn over a shimmery black burnout henley which is also from Victoria’s Secret but purchased years apart
* my most comfy jeans of the moment, Paige Premium denim “Debbonair” in “rebel without a cause” wash
* A fabulously ginormous charcoal gray scarf I found for $15 at the little sundry shop in the lobby of the building the art gallery is attached to …and it’s quite warm.
* Rosegold gray ankle boots {find a pair in brown here}
* Tom Ford cat eye sunglasses
* Nails: one coat of OPI “You Don’t Know Jacques!”w/one coat of OPI “My Private Jet”
* And last but CERTAINLY not least, my sequined fanny pack – in Gray Hematite {which, if you follow me on Twitter, you’d know all about already …and how I secretly enjoyed watching girls mock me as I walked by ;) Now, if you DO follow my tweets, you may also know that I bought not ONE but THREE different sequined fanny packs …this one is my favorite. They are a whopping $11.50ea & shipped from downtown LA – & most likely less $$ if I just drove downtown to get em. {note: even on it’s smallest setting, the belt for the “pack” was too large & slipped down my hips, and I’m not a tiny woman …in a pinch {no pun intended} I folded over/under & safety pinned the canvas strap to fit}

sequined fanny pack and vintage patchwork leather jacket

The husband and I decided to spend New Years Eve day out and New Years Eve eve in …so we journeyed over a hill {15 mins without traffic} to downtown Santa Monica {though I actually wasn’t aware it was referred to as “downtown” now -or ever} and meandered around the ginormous outdoor shopping extravaganza that is known as Third Street Promenade.

Since it’s just a few blocks and a cliff away from the beach we thought it may be chilly and fanny packed a pair of fingerless black gloves just to be safe …but the weather was quite lovely and the sky was so clear & smog free you could see the mountains on the opposite side. It was a fantastically perfect day to play with my new SLR and obviously gave me the perfect excuse to wear my new jazzy fanny pack ;)

The husband and I found a quiet corner on the 3rd level and spent a few minutes figuring out the perfect settings of the “outfit shot” …I think for our first try, they already came out ten times better than my past shots. Again, why did I wait so freaking long to get an SLR? oh yeah, because I’m an idiot, that’s why.

Downtown Santa Monica was still decorated for the holidays and as the sun was setting, the Christmas ornaments that hung from the trees along the streets all flickered on and shone different colors onto the branches and leaves. With the sunset over the blue ocean in the distance, it was all pretty magical really.

In other news: The husband has offered to help me take my outfit shots! I’m kind of ridiculously excited about this because I’m usually all alone running to and fro a digital powershot camera leaving people quite confused {and generally asking if I want them to take a picture of me}. But with the husband as my “photographer” {though I literally just bark orders at him: Get lower!, Am I focused?, Stop tilting the camera!, Is the light behind me too bright?} I will be more confident taking shots in public places instead of mostly residential areas which presumably will result in more interesting photos. And when he wields the camera, I tend to smile more …because I get all nervous and shy and coy and giggly. Yeah. That happens.

    Happy New Year Maegan! Loving how the SLR shots are turning out – I’m a newb to the Nikon as well, so if you come up with any helpful tips, am eager to hear! Maybe sharing the settings you tried to get each shot? It’s clear already you have a great eye for this stuff!

    Love that overhead shot of the Promenade. Of course, when I was growing up in Santa Monica back in the 70′s, that was just “the mall” where I would hang out with friends and shop at The Smuggler. It’s gotten so swanky now!

    Who KNEW a sequin fanny pack could look this hot???? I just blogged yesterday about some girls bagging on my shoes when The Hubs and I went out Sunday night. Maybe I need to change my perspective and ENJOY it when haters hate.

    Love the boots, the new photography, and that distressed leatha egg chair? Just made me a wee bit incontinent.

    Merci!

    The only time I ever considered rocking the fanny pack was when I spotted a fancy one from Chanel, but since I love sparkles and sequins I would totally rock this one too!!

    That is awesome the hubby is going to help you with your photos. I have the same dilemma.. I always take my own photos and it’s sometimes tough, but my bf helps out as well, so I’m lucky… We’re both lucky. :)

    p.s. great photos by the way!

    During Christmas, we went to lunch at our favourite restaurant in Seattle while we were traveling, and I found myself giggling, tossing my hair, pushing tendrils behind my ears, stealing glances at him… and I realized, shit! I’m still flirting with him after 6 years.

    It’s a nice feeling.

    Fanny packs are crazy.

    Two things –
    #1: The sequined fanny pack rocks. I have a gold one but now think I also need a sequined one. Sorry in advance for biting your style.
    #2: I was planning to get a DSLR for my birthday in May, but I’d decided I was getting the Gucci Vintage Web Medium Boston Bag instead. But your pics are SO much crisper now, that I have to figure out how to get both the camera and the bag. Ah, life’s decisions.
    Thanks for the inspiration as always, darling!
