The Grandma I Never Knew ...via YouTube

I come from a very musical family, mostly of fantastic drummers but of fabulous singers as well. And if you've been reading my blog for some time, you'd know I too dabbled in a singing career of my own to follow in family tradition {not referring to my time spent working as a karaoke host at Dimples, but more my less noteworthy time spent in an all girl pop singing group called "Goddess" in the early 2000's}. My dad's mom, who would be known as my Grandma, was a singer, but she passed away in 1974, two years before I was born so I never knew her. I've seen a few photos and heard many stories but now, thanks to the internet, I've gotten a much clearer view of who my Grandma actually was.

A few things I do know:
* Her name was Elva Polk and she was a singer.
* She was in a singing group with her brothers and sisters called "The Town Cryers" {though this video dubs them as "The Four Polks"}
* She was a direct descendent of the eleventh President, Polk. {like great grand daughter or something}

My cousin found this video via YouTube and posted it on Facebook a few days ago, proving yet again that Facebook is indeed, a good thing. I watched the whole thing in awe really.

Since it's not in HD {I'm guessing this was in the 1940's} and the two sisters look very similar and since I've never met her, I'm not sure exactly which one is my Grandma ...though I'm leaning toward the one with the more hooded eyes {on the left}, much like mine and my father's and my uncles. But I could be totally off base. It kind of brings tears to my eyes. I wish I knew her.

* My uncle just confirmed that she is indeed the one I thought she was {left}

Internet, I love you ;)

We are related! My maiden name is Polk and I am a great-niece of James K. Polk, through one of his brothers (James and Sarah had no children, at least there are no records of any). My dad got WAY into the family genealogy a few years ago so I bet some of his research contains your branch of the family as well.

Ohmigosh!!! This is amazing! I definitely would have said it's the girl on the left - of course I don't know that for sure, but she looks a LOT more like you than the other girl! This is just so cool though!!! I wish I had a video of my grandma on my dad's side! She died when I was really young and I wish I knew her too! xoxoxoxo

I'm there with you! I'm adopted and found my birth mother on Facebook last November right before Thanksgiving. At 42 years old, I had pretty much given up all hope of ever finding her. The internet is indeed a lovely place. :)

(Here's the adoption story if you are interested: http://www.wgntv.com/news/coverstory/wgntv-facebook-reunion-dec22,0,5745750.story)

You're so lucky you at least know about her and what she really looks like! My mother's dad died a few months after she was born in 1968, I know nothing of him and I'm the one who looks just like him. It's really sad for me, and I've tried digging up his past, but cannot find anything. :'(

This is so totally awesome!!! How amazing to find footage of your grandmother, and even more special that she was so talented, along with her sister and brothers. My uncle and I are like anomalies in our family - we're like the only musically inclined people in our family and I'm always envious of tight knit families who sit around and jam and have all kinds of kids who play guitars and have friends over and they've all been playing since they were 2. LOL Oh well, enuf about me! So amazing about you and your family!!! I'm glad you were able to find this footage, and thank you for sharing it with us!

I was just given some videos from my grandparents taken in 1958 (a family neighbor did them, and so my gparents and mom as a kid were in there and she shared). I knew my grandparents, but lost them young and rather tragically. When I saw them dancing together, it brought tears to my eyes! I know when my mom shares it with her siblings (I cut all the parts with them out, added some tear-jerker period music, and made them DVD) they'll feel the same way. It's AMAZING you/your cuz were able to find this!

oh I do love that! My grandma sang with Glen Miller in the USO but as far as I'm aware there aren't any recordings or videos of her singing with him.
