Global Earth Hour : Tonight Will you Be in the Dark?

* Do it – canvas bag *

This will be our 3rd year participating in Earth Hour …and I’m just as excited today as I have been in years past.

In 2009, when the husband and I first heard about Earth Hour, we turned off everything in the house and at 8:30pm, we went out for a walk …enthusiastically hoping to find The Valley in the dark. We were quickly met with blinding disappointment in the form of lights. It seemed as if the only homes that were dark were the ones that were empty. Since this is such an easy and fun little event, I couldn’t imagine people not participating if they only knew about it.

It’s such an easy little way to say “hey, I care, I’m involved!” Last year we had visitors come by and give us a housewarming gift under candle light …which made it just a little bit more special!

This year, Earth Hour is asking what we’re all going to do beyond Earth Hour …and I wonder if they mean on top of driving a Prius, using only canvas bags at the grocery store {and any store for that matter}, eating organically, replacing all of our regular light bulbs with CFL bulbs or halogens, recycling, using non-toxic cleansing products like Method & 7th Generation. yes I’m bragging 😉 There’s always more to do though. like wish I had more time to devote to my first blog & eco company For instance, I’ve wanted to start/plant our own little garden & compost since we moved in last year but haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe I will make that a goal for Earth Day this year?

I LOVE watching Vegas turn off their lights! It almost makes me want to go to Vegas next year for Global Earth Hour …fun, right? It’s settled!

Earth Hour, was first started in Australia (2007) as a way to bring community together to acknowledge the importance of reducing consumption of earths natural resources. Turning off the lights for an hour helps us see the impact we have on the environment…

Go to Earth Hour for more info and to sign up! . . . but watch this first, if you want to get all emotional and stuff.

Yay for Earth Hour! I only found out about it this year and I will be participating. It might be just a small insignificant thing but imagine 6 billion people not consuming electricity for one hour. Not so insignificant anymore, huh?

I was always a fan and supporter of Earth Hour until I read this article on GOOD yesterday. It really gives you something to think about.

I love this, and I would *so* do it if I wasn’t working at the restaurant tonight.

At that time tonight, the only things people are going to care about are gettin’ some wings and a second round o’beer.

It’s already past Earth Hour here in Hong Kong, but my sister and her friends are still participating! Our apartment is still only lit by candles right now lol. And all the dinner guests were given glow sticks 😛

Thanks for posting this Maegan! I am getting my Master’s in Environmental Studies and I love seeing you talk about this. You should try to start composting, it’s SO easy! (And then the garden will come easier since you’ll have instant mulch!)

I did it last year – a little late because honestly I forgot but I did it! This year I plan to be ready. Candles lit, wine poured and books all around. Romantic and earth-friendly can’t be beat!

Earth Hour is great, I did it this year and a couple years past. I usually am at work when it’s going on, but still try to participate however I can, and encourage friends to do the same. Thanks for the lovely post about it!

Do I get credit for participating if my electricity was cut off….due to nonpayment….because I bought shoes instead??

No? Yes? Probably not:( It should totally count though.

Would it count if I left my house dark…and then went to my bf’s house to watch tv? Is that not the point? Probably not either:)

Truth is…I wasn’t home…I was stuffing my face at a pizza shop so I wll count that as participation.

(seriously, I love the idea of Earth hour)

You should definitely compost. We started doing it over a year ago and were shocked at how simple it is. My hubby was a little against it at first (he was worried it would stink) but quickly became a convert. I’m always pleasantly surprised at how much waste I get to keep out of our trashcan. Plus when I did a little research our town provided us with a free container for it. It’s just a large trashcan they cut holes in but they dropped it off and we were ready to start.
