My Favorite Shampoos & Conditioners

best shampoos for long hair

I get a ton of questions about my hair ...mostly, what products do I use on it? And in the past I've done a few posts on my hair care routines and different shampoos I've tried or fallen in love with and switched to but I thought I'd get a bit more in depth with exactly how I use all the different shampoos and conditioners that take up space in my shower.

Here is my secret: I mix them all up in my hand.

favorite shampoos

First Shampoos . . . then conditioners, not both, together.

However, I mix according to the look I'm going for.

* On a normal day, I try to keep my blonde intact by mixing Dove Color Repair with a bit of Dove Volume Boost {not shown} with a squeeze of Fekkai Color Care and a little bit of Shimmer Lights {purple shampoo} on top.

* If I don't have time to actually do my hair, I opt for the "beachy look" and let my hair air dry. For this look, I mix the shampoos that dry my hair out the most: Organix Coconut Milk, a bit of Fekkai Color Care, and Shimmer Lights. These leave my hair more tangled and give it a "I just came back from the beach and have been driving in a Jeep Wrangler" feel.

* On the days I know I won't need to be styling my hair, I give it a break and try to replenish it by using Mane 'n Tail & body, Dove Moisturizing Care, and Dove Revival ...which tend to weigh my hair down a bit more, not style or hold a curl as well and cause it to get greasy more quickly.

* As for conditioners, I use the corresponding "mix" to match the shampoo-poo platter I've created: Color shampoos get color conditioner mixes and so on and so forth. Also, I wash my hair first in the shower, rinse, then condition and allow the conditioner to stay on my hair throughout the remainder of my shower. I also try to only wash my hair 3 days a week.

* Notes: I've used other Purple/Blonde-enhancing shampoos like Schwarzkopf Bonacure Color Save Silver but prefer CLAIROL Shimmer Lights to all of them. HOWEVER, Shimmer Lights is VERY drying so I never use it alone, I always mix it with others and don't find the need for a purple conditioner at the moment. I like Mane 'n Tail conditioner as well but have run out at the moment. Sometimes the Fekkai weighs my hair down a little. And I am still surprised daily at how much I adore Dove Shampoos and Conditioners.

* Also note: I don't use any other products on my hair on the regular other than a little hair spray to finish a styled look or up-do.

I CANNOT WAiT TO ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO SAY "I just came back from the beach and have been driving in a Jeep Wrangler" AND HAVE iT BE TRUE!

...now I just have to meet someone who owns a Jeep Wrangler...

;)

Great post, Maegan, but I'd have to modify a lot of it because my hair is undyed, brunette, and naturally wavy/curly/kill me. :)

Never once thought about mixing them! I normally try to stick to pureology.

Honestly, I think you're BRILLIANT. Holy shit. I have like 18 bottles of shampoo and conditioner currently in my shower and would have never in a million years thought to do this, but now. OMG. The possibilities are endless!!!! Amazed.

Ooooh Maegan thanks again for the tips! My roommate always laughs at all the different bottles of shampoo & conditioner in the shower---but now I have a true purpose for them all..TO MIX THEM!

Thanks again for all the hair advice--you have no idea how great it is!

As a hairstylist this post slightly makes me cringe. I guess if it works for you then cool. If you ever wanted to simplify you could go with a system that has the specific amount of moisture that you're wanting for that day (like BedHead Urban Antidotes Damage Levels 1-3).The higher that level that more moisture. I do get adding the shimmer lights though. It is an oldie but goodie.....and a great way to make any shampoo a toning shampoo.

Or you could just continue to be a mad scientist every morning.......just be sure to do an evil laugh while cleansing and conditioning.

And if anyone things that they can shampoo and conditioner their way to your amazing hair they are sadly mistaken.

WOW! Thats a lot of shampoos!..but hey if it works..it works! I used to use Mane n' Tail in high school..I heard a rumor that it would make your hair grow at least on inch a month!! HA!

Have you ever tried AVEDA? I love their stuff and you can find exactly what you're looking for without mixing.

Fun to mix, and if it works for you why not! Just be cautious when mixing ingredients...because these things are science and the reactions some chemicals have together could be doing long term damage.

Those are some interesting tips. I might try some of them next time I wash my hair ;)

I love to mix my shampoos/conditioners too, mostly because I never want to choose just one (of anything in life really...lol!). Good to know I'm not the only one, lol! :) I need to try the mane n' tail shampoo, I heard it's great.

Wow very interesting! I've never even thought about mixing shampoos but I only use one. I've been curious about the coconut milk one because I have a major obsession with coconut anything but was worried it would dry out my color treated hair.

My hair girl hates what I do to my hair but it works for me. I wash every other night with Paul Mitchel Moisture Shampoo then use the matching conditioner and sleep in it, then rinse in the morning and style. It works for me :)

Wow, I was often wondering what would happen if I mixed up several shampoos or conditioners...now I know: I´d have such a gorgeous hair as you!
Thanks for giving me the right impulse to try it!

I agree with Carrie Beth. Meagan has gorgeous hair and it will always be gorgeous no matter what sh uses. I have used every shampoo and conditioner under the sun and nothing has changed the fact that I have baby fine hair that tangles at the drop of a hat.

Meagan can let her hair air dry and it looks fab. That technique is not so fab on me. I'm tempted to try this mixure of products but I am keeping sulfates off my hair at the moment.

The ONLY thing that has EVER given me gorgeous hair is a $300.00 Brazilian Blowout. This treatment left my hair smooth, tangle free and gorgeous and was WORTH EVERY CENT! I'm getting another one soon.

my only question is how do the different smells of the shampoos mix together? doesn't it smell odd?

Shampoo: Water. I rub/scrub/massage at my head and hair as if I'm rubbing shampoo into it, and do so for maybe a minute or less, then rinse for a bit.
Conditioner: Currently, A/G Re:Coil, but since starting water-only, I have not used it in maybe a week? It has been at least 2 weeks of water-only, I used the conditioner on my ends for about a week or so when I first ditched the shampoo. If water-only works, I'll just use the conditioner on my ends every now and then, probably more so in the winter or a few times a month.

My hair feels and looks so damn thick. It's crazy. And it's curlier too. This is all much easier than smooshing products together in hopes it looks nice lol.

As a dyer/ heat-styler, I'm always on the lookout for the best tips to make my hair behave. I wash 2-3x a week, also, but I think my favourite tip I've gotten from a stylist is to do my conditioner first (at the beginning of the shower), let it "soak" in, then do a quickie shampoo at the end to clean it up. Gets me the deep conditioning I need and want without the weight of the conditioner on the strand.

I also looooooove argan oil when I'm heat styling. If you haven't checked it out, it's worth a look. So good.
