After about a month of wedding planning, the husband and I decided to leave all the stress behind and sneak off to Vegas and tie the knot… just the two of us, with no fanfare. And we did. September 4th, 2006…. Labor Day weekend, 5 years ago Sunday. And it was wonderful.
Though we returned home to some saddened family members who felt left out, all in all, our little wedding ceremony was really special. And in the heat of the Vegas moment, we wed Vegas style. I in an Agent Provacateur ivory corset and jeans and the husband in an ill-fitting suit, adidas sneakers and a t-shirt that said “Everyone loves and Italian Boy” with an illustration from Super Mario Brothers. Yeah, klassy I know, but it was Vegas and really, wearing a wedding gown in a chapel where an Elvis impersonator was waiting in the next room just seemed silly.
We threw a reception party for our friends and family a few months later with a bit of a 60’s theme polaroids above. I found a vintage 60’s dress topped with champagne colored sequins and a velvet bow complete with the original tags and I altered it to modernize it a bit. I wore my grandma’s leopard coat which she had made for herself in the 60’s and a pair of champagne peep toe marc by marc jacobs pumps. I was a bit too tan and a bit too over the top but it was fun.
Our 5 year anniversary had me reminiscing about our 2006 wedding memories so I thought I’d share a few of the details here.

Even though it was completely non-traditional, I did wear something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. In fact, I wore a lot of blue. I also wore these silver shoes prior to DIYing them. While I do love the way we married, the one thing I regret is not having any really great professional photos other than a few from the ceremony like the one above which I used as our wedding reception invite. No pretty engagement photos, or dreamy detail photos, or ya know, just pretty wedding photos you get to keep for generations and reminisce about. Though I’m pretty sure I take enough now to make up for it 😉

We spent this Labor Day weekend at The Oceana, our favorite hotel in Santa Monica overlooking the ocean to just get away and be together like we were that Labor Day weekend 5 years ago in Vegas. I’ll share photos of our little stay-cay including my new rings {unless you follow me on Instagram and got a sneak peek} and the husband’s new ring as well. Hope you had a lovely long weekend… if you’re anything like me, you’re having a difficult time wrapping your brain around getting back to work. Why can’t life be one long vacation?

Congrats on your anniversary!!! I love your photos 🙂
I think that if my hubby hadn’t wanted a big family wedding, I would have “eloped” with just our closest of family and a small bridal party. Would have been so much easier!!

You should get some dreamy photos taken for your Christmas cards by some photographer. They will have a great and easy time making your guys photographs look like they came straight from Vogue, and then you will have them forever 🙂 You could also wear a pretty white dress 😉

Happy Anniversary! I think it’s really cute, the way you went about getting married. A big to do is not for everyone and all that matters is that the two of you are happy. I adore your ring and the outfit that you wore for the reception party. You could always get professional pictures done for an anniversary.

So funny – as I was looking at the pictures in this post, I was wondering how you deal with taking your big DSLR everywhere… and, then, I get to the bottom of the post. That answers my question 🙂 ! Can’t wait to get the updated iphone to take better pictures ’cause I sure as heck don’t traipse my camera around everywhere either.

Oh, and, Happy Anniversary!! Should’ve said that first 🙂 . Glad it was so beautiful and relaxing!

Memory book ideas for a 50th wedding anniversary are plentiful. Memory books make the perfect gift or party accoutrement for the event. Create one in advance of the special couple‘s big day and present it to them to share with their family members and friends. You‘ll have almost as much fun making the memory book as you will when you share in the delight that it will bring.
