October 13, 2009 + DIY sleeveless coat
What's great about taking photos of your outfits is that you get this sort of, inside look at how your outfit really looks - on you. Sometimes things you miss in person, staring at your reflection in the mirror, really stand out in photos. In fact, I almost think it's essential in preparing for a special event or a prom or wedding, to take photos prior in different lighting to see just what works and what doesn't. Also, some fabrics are completely transparent when a camera flash goes off, even black, and since there are cameras everywhere now, it's best to be prepared with the right undergarments.
But what also comes from photographing oneself so often are the flaws {in yourself} that you were otherwise unaware of. Like my jawline, for instance {see the first photo}. I had no idea until I began blogging and photographing my outfits what my jawline looked like, and just how much I disliked the profile of it. Now, I'm NOT looking for compliments here, I promise, it's just something I was unaware of then and COMPLETELY aware of now. So much so that I find myself paying attention to it on others, women AND men, and mostly while watching TV, not in real life. Do you notice that about yourself? I'm not trying to point out your flaws or anything, but we all have things we'd like to change. I think if it's a specific thing like your knees or your nose, for instance, it's the one thing you notice most on other people. You may admire knees and noses that you find pleasing. Since I don't have a problem with my knees or my nose, I never pay attention to anyone's knees or noses, but I could imagine if I did, I'd be checking out knees and noses all the time to see how mine measure up.
Not that I am in any way promoting vanity or promoting a ridiculous awareness of all of your flaws, but when you know your flaws, you can learn how to disguise them. Just like when you're honest about your assets, you pull focus there so as to look your best and feel the most confident and put you best foot forward always.

I agree that you see yourself (and your outfits) in a totally different way on the photos. since I started blogging, I learned which poses and clothes work best for me but there is always room for improvement :) Love looking at your old outfits :)

I know what you're saying. One thing I do think though, my brother taught me this after a girlfriend pointed out a flaw; never ever point out your flaws to anybody else. They'll never have noticed them and like you say, will always notice them going forward!
I absolutely love the leopard / print dress combo, amazing shot, too.

Lol this is soooo true.... I can't stand my feet...though I've come to realize they could be worst and I work with the feet I have...I do notice other peoples feet...especially the superstars and models in clothing magazines and see that I'm not alone...there are many lovely people with imperfect feet..So hey I just work with what I have and know what shoes to avoid and totally notice a nice foot especially my baby boys..I always say I'm going to switch feet with him...lol Good Day to Ya!
Loving ALL of these looks! Very inspiring.

I absolutely love your style. All these looks are different yet they work in their own way. Great job!
I think your jawline is what makes your face unique, in a good way. I have a really pointy chin and in some angles I think it is horrid. I searched through pictures from modeling for my mom and found that in a profile shot where I tilt my head back it is actually kind of beautiful. I don't hate it so much now. So my advice would be to find an angle where you think it looks great and do that once in a while, it will still bother you but hopefully a little bit less.
You really do have great fashion sense. The fact that you can look back 2 years and still look stylish is proof!
really enjoyed looking through all of our October outfits! You are so fashionable! Thanks for spreading fashion inspiration my way :)

Oct 6 was a very good day!my favorite of the set.
Sometimes a camera is more effective than a mirror in looking at every little detail of yourself.

Girl, your jawline is just fine! So funny how we all are hypercritical of ourselves. Haha. You are gorgeous!
I had forgotten about your sleeveless coat DIY! Thanks for reminding me........I like that look! Time to visit a few thrift shops and look in the coat section!
Love this post! Such fun to look back at these looks (I've been a reader for a long time, and remember most of these outfits!), the yellow skirt and leopard coat are two of my favs!
Maegan - you have a great jawline and it's got a lovely swoop. I have my great-grandmother's slightly jowly chin/neck - which doesn't look good from the side at all!
But while photos are useful (and have been instrumental in removing several items from my wardrobe!), they don't always convey someone's vitality - which may be what makes them gorgeous in real life but doesn't translate to film. Particularly when they're awkward in front of the lens.
BTW - thank you for this blog - I'm having an absolute ball reading it from the first entries right through. And taking inspiration!
I am obsessed with women who have perfect underarms (armpits) since mine are always ruddy and bumpy. Gross. Now I feel like a weirdo for admitting that.
Your jawline is beautiful. Seriously, I have NO IDEA what you're on about there . . . :)
I always notice thighs. I love girls with unskinny thighs! Mine are toned and muscular but slightly on the stocky side, shall we say.
(Love + Marriage: I don't think you are a weirdo, but if you are one, then I'm one too! Feelin' ya, sista!)
So true, I always take a picture of myself before buying or keeping anything new. This practice has saved me quite a bit of money as it saved me from a disasterous purchase or two, most recently a betsey johnson dress that made my arms look fat.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I take outfit photos and post them on my blog 5 days a week, and boy have I started noticing features I never thought would irk me. My knees were a big one for awhile, and when I would critique a photo by saying "my knees look fat and too wrinkley" the bf would look at me like a nut case - I decided then and there I would keep the fact that I was suddenly noticing other ladies knees in comparison to myself. The downside of sharing outfit photos is definitely becoming much more critical of your own features.
