Our Don & Betty Draper
~ Halloween Costumes ~

MAC "Such Flare!" matte A61 lipstick {which ended up on my forehead at one point during the night... the reason I rarely wear red lips!}

The husband and I had a blast dressing up as Don and Betty Draper for our Halloween party on Saturday night... so much fun we may just dress up again tonight to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters!

After searching every thrift shop in the area, I actually found my early 60's dress on Etsy {J Antiques shop} and while I was looking for anything but black, this dress was in perfect vintage condition and priced well. And though a bit too big, I was happy to find a dress that fit at all... and it's a costume, right?! Even the perfectionist in me is forgiving when it comes to costumes but just barely. The empire waist bodice has ornate black beading and a huge black satin bow just above my actual waist while the skirt of the dress is sheer and fine pleated with a flip at the edge. It's actually quite pretty... the husband said I should wear dresses like it more often, lol.

I teased the front of my hair, created a "pouf" and pinned it back leaving a piece down in the front similar to a look Betty wore once and then faux bobbed the rest of my hair after hot rolling it. And while it was much messier than Betty's ever is, it was good enough because I ran out of time!

We found the husband's vintage 60's suit at Iguana and it fit like a glove. I had the vintage 60's skinny tie but we had to buy the suspenders, shoes and shirt. {I found him in the bedroom watching a youtube video on how to tie a tie on my iphone... priceless}

Exciting News!

books, notebooks

A few months ago a publishing house contacted me with a book idea. When I first read the email I thought they were just sort of interested in my feedback and/or to write an article to include in the book. But after a bit more email correspondence, it was clear that what they were really looking for was an author and wondered if I had any interest in writing a book.

Do you know how many times I had to re-read the actual sentence to make sure I was reading it correctly?! A LOT.

After more email correspondence and phone meetings and a few more emails, the deal was done. It was all rather quick and tidy actually... but then there was about a week and a half before I knew for sure which almost killed me. It's that excitement that you're not actually supposed to be excited about but can't really help it either. And then one afternoon I checked my email and there it was. Finalized. I was going to write a book! I was so happy and excited, a few tears of joy may have slipped out of my eyes and down my cheeks.

And then I my very next thought was OHMYGOD I HAVE TO WRITE A BOOK!!

What I'm really excited about is the idea for the book and just how perfectly it aligns with my style philosophy. I mean I don't know how many times I've said aloud "Flaunt your assets and disguise your flaws".... and when I expressed that in a meeting with the publisher she said, "That's how I found you".

So obviously, the book is about style and the tentative title is :

Rock Your Assets: How to Dress your Body Type to Become a Fashion Goddess

And I have a LOT of work ahead of me.

Refashioned Jewels: Coloring Gems DIY

black hand fiturine -crystal- barware-diy earrings

It's not that I don't love these Amrita Singh Napeague Earrings which I found on GILT a few months ago {and wore here} but I realized recently that I have quite a few pairs of turquoise earrings, so I thought I'd DIY them into something new. Though I just noticed, when looking for the link on the Amrita Singh site, that these earrings are also available with black stones. But this DIY is for earrings, necklaces, bracelets or any piece of jewelry with gemstones: grab your black Sharpies and give them a makeover!

Sharpie Earrings DIY - materials

* Sharpie
* Q-tips
* Earrings or necklace with faceted colored gemstones

steps
Sharpie Earrings DIY - 1

* Carefully mark your gems evenly with a new Sharpie making sure to avoid the metal base.

Sharpie Earrings DIY - 2

* Immediately after marking, take your q-tip and simply buff the stone so some of the marker wears away allowing your stone to shine through {if your stones are not faceted, this won't work}.

Sharpie Earrings DIY - 3

* You may also choose not to buff your stone, which will give you a solid black effect. You may also choose to use a different color... any darker tones will work. My goal was to achieve a vintage look, and I love the way they turned out.

A Glitch in the Matrix:
October 2009 Style

sleeveless-tweed-coat-jeans-wedges

October 13, 2009 + DIY sleeveless coat

What's great about taking photos of your outfits is that you get this sort of, inside look at how your outfit really looks - on you. Sometimes things you miss in person, staring at your reflection in the mirror, really stand out in photos. In fact, I almost think it's essential in preparing for a special event or a prom or wedding, to take photos prior in different lighting to see just what works and what doesn't. Also, some fabrics are completely transparent when a camera flash goes off, even black, and since there are cameras everywhere now, it's best to be prepared with the right undergarments.

But what also comes from photographing oneself so often are the flaws {in yourself} that you were otherwise unaware of. Like my jawline, for instance {see the first photo}. I had no idea until I began blogging and photographing my outfits what my jawline looked like, and just how much I disliked the profile of it. Now, I'm NOT looking for compliments here, I promise, it's just something I was unaware of then and COMPLETELY aware of now. So much so that I find myself paying attention to it on others, women AND men, and mostly while watching TV, not in real life. Do you notice that about yourself? I'm not trying to point out your flaws or anything, but we all have things we'd like to change. I think if it's a specific thing like your knees or your nose, for instance, it's the one thing you notice most on other people. You may admire knees and noses that you find pleasing. Since I don't have a problem with my knees or my nose, I never pay attention to anyone's knees or noses, but I could imagine if I did, I'd be checking out knees and noses all the time to see how mine measure up.

Not that I am in any way promoting vanity or promoting a ridiculous awareness of all of your flaws, but when you know your flaws, you can learn how to disguise them. Just like when you're honest about your assets, you pull focus there so as to look your best and feel the most confident and put you best foot forward always.

Stress Free, High Fashion

Whether your style is casual cool, classic, preppy, ladylike, or sharp and structured, the fun current trends really let you decide who you want to be on any given day. But with our busy schedules, when is there time for shopping?

Women make time for shopping. With all these online sale sites, it's hard not to check them out and shop before we even finish our first cup of coffee in the morning. I do about 99% of my shopping online. Not only do I LOVE getting packages delivered to my doorstep, I like trying on new items in my own home rather than in a poorly lit, cellulite-enhancing dressing room. I also like the option of pairing my latest purchases with what is already in my closet; to match shoes and accessories and decide whether or not it will make the cut.

Shopping online lets me research prices, compare designs from competing retailers and make better decisions. Sometimes, however, what arrives on my doorstep, just doesn't live up to its online photos, like the pair of pants that were three inches too short and the shoes that looked like they had been worn! When something doesnít make the cut, some retailers offer free shipping on returns, which makes it easy to send something back. Unfortunately not all sites offer that luxury and others have such short-term return policies that procrastinators often miss the refund window.

For that reason, I like to be protected when I shop online, and in times like this, the way you pay makes all the difference. With the help of American Express, here are a few of my strategies for shopping smart online:

Shop Reputable Retailers: However, sometimes you don't know they're reputable until you have an issue with them. With the package I received and mentioned above that looked as if the items had been worn and damaged, I spent $40 on return shipping because it was international and the retailer did NOT give me a refund on shipping. Needless to say, I'll never shop them again. But for the most part, if you contact the merchant nicely and explain your issue, they will be friendly and helpful in assisting you.

Understand the Return Policy: It's important to understand the retailer's return policy before buying the item so you donít get stuck with something you didn't expect. But the way you pay can help protect you from mishaps. For example, if you pay with an American Express charge card, and accidentally buy something on "final sale" and the store won't take it back, or even if you've waited too long to return it, AMEX will let you return it with them instead. And that is amazing. You're also protected if your personal information is stolen and someone charges this year's "it" bag to your account.

Know Your Size: Many designers' size charts vary, so know if you're a 6 or a 16 to avoid wasted shipping charges. Shoes are the most difficult items for me to buy online because my big, American, size 9 foot in most European sizes may be a 40 but in Italy, it's a 41.

Don't Waste Your Budget on Shipping: This time of year, there are a ton of offers everywhere you "click", especially ones for free shipping. Make sure you know who is offering free shipping, both on the original shipment and on returns so you can send back what you don't love, guilt free.

Hunt Down Online Offers: Whenever Iím making online purchases, I do a search for coupon codes or online offers for whatever retailer I'm shopping before checking out because 99% of the time I find a discount that saves me $20-$100. If you see a "coupon code" box at checkout, do a search and you're bound to come up with something.

Tap into Your Points: Another advantage of American Express: Membership Rewards. Every time you shop, you rack up points that you can use to splurge on an item for yourself. Whether it's a pair of pumps or a stylish, new little black dress, you can use your points to reward yourself, without clearing your bank balance.

Today only! What's your strategy for getting the hottest trends this season?

Tell me your online shopping tips on Twitter and you could win a $250 prize from sponsor American Express. Tweet @blogherdeals and include the hashtag #Savvy&Online to enter. Sweepstakes ends at 11:59 PM PT October 25, 2011. Full rules and prize details here.

A kind of dressed up jeans and a sweater look here. Honestly, I was pmsing, tired and just wanted to wear something loose and comfortable so I threw on my favorite loose jeans and an old sweater the husband doesn't wear anymore. Obviously it was a bit too casual for work so I tossed on some accessories to dress it up a bit and ran out the door. And I was comfy, all. day. long. Mission accomplished.

I was so excited Friday afternoon when I returned home to our new bar cabinet, and reason to finish decorating the dining room, until I checked my email and realized I missed a great opportunity with the Today Show {a week-long DIY segment} because I had to be at the gallery all day. And I'm not going to lie, I was really upset about it. While it was a really last minute request, I replied early in the morning stating my interest but that I'd be out all day and would send the required few lines of text by the end of the day. But it was too late. And I kicked myself for staying in my past life while my present life was calling. Just thinking about it again frustrates me on like 5 different levels *sigh* but my absence opened a spot for another DIY blogger to shine and that makes me happy.

* UPDATE: Apparently, they did include my lace halter bustier DIY! Crazy... the email response I got was that I missed the time cut off. Go figure! Here's the DIY Today Feature. I'm in the photo slideshow at the bottom among other fab DIY bloggers.

* I'm choosing a winner tomorrow for a $40 Target giftcard & fun craft supplies so follow this link to leave a comment if you haven't yet.

We Have Found Our New Bar Cabinet!

home decor, bar, dining room, buffet, zgallerie, furniture, mirrored furniture

* I might change the knobs to give it a little more character *

Apologies if you follow me on Twitter or Instagram as you may have seen this directly after we purchased it yesterday afternoon at ZGallerie but for everyone else, this Salvatore Antiqued Mirrored Bar Cabinet is what we decided on for our dining room.

I actually saw this cabinet online the other day in my search but didn't love it at all. ZGallerie also happened to be the very last place we looked before calling it a day yesterday. We had been all over town {to 6 different places!} and found two cabinets that were close but no cigar. But since Fashion Square was on our way home I said, "Let's just see what they have and grab some food and then go home". The husband obliged {but only because I mentioned food} and this cabinet was literally the first thing we saw when we walked into the store. It was right by the front door and it was perfect... and it was the husband's favorite to boot! On top of that, someone had ordered one recently & never picked it up so there was one all boxed up and ready to go. I think it was meant for us!

Yes we spent more than we wanted to {even w/the 10% off} but the original idea was to replace our temporary bar shelves with a proper bar cabinet but that looked more like a buffet than an actual "bar" and this fit the bill.

The husband and the brother are picking it up today and I'm hoping it will be home before I return from the gallery so I can just get to work filling it up, decorating it, and finishing the room. I'm still making due with the old chairs but they're fine for now. Baby steps ;)

It will replace these DIY shelves

* If it's at the house when I get home I'll take an "after" shot and post it here later today.
