I’m Pretty Sure She Smells Like Stale Cigarettes & Broken Dreams

vanilla perfume-coconut water-perfumes

A few days ago I accidentally stumbled upon a forum of women who were spending much of their day badmouthing me on the internet {it wasn’t the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last} but one of them, who thought she was exceptionally clever, said she was pretty sure I smelled like stale cigarettes and broken dreams. Oh God, I laughed so hard. But then I thought for a moment… and though I’m fairly sure “broken dreams” are odorless, I remembered a time in my mid 20′s where I most certainly smelled like cigarettes and was so anxious and ruled by panic attacks and agoraphobia that I DID feel like a complete failure in life. I couldn’t even leave the house let alone go after my dreams! But what an interesting thing to say now I thought, considering the title of the forum was “Another Blogger Gets A Book Deal“.

So I thought I’d steal her oh so clever line, use it as my title, and set the record straight about how I ACTUALLY SMELL… and that is, like freshly baked cookies.

In fact, almost every week when my trainer, Lisa arrives, she asks me what smells like cookies, as if I just baked a batch before our workout. But the answer is never found in the kitchen and is instead, standing directly in front of her.

The truth is, I don’t like heavy perfumes. Blame it on my Grandma, whose entire house did actually smell like stale cigarettes and Chanel No.5 which permeated our clothes when we went to visit and left smelling like we’d spent the day in a casino in Vegas.

Regardless of the reasoning behind it, I’m a vanilla-lover and have been wearing some version of it for over 15 years now and I don’t think it will ever get old. It just smells so good. I love mixing it with a splash of coconut or another sweet baked good scent because really, who doesn’t like cookies?

My all-time favorite mixers are:

* Comptoir Sud Pacifique ~ Vanille Coco
* Aquaolina ~Pink Sugar

My new favorite additions are:

* Super ~ Coconut Quench which is so light, I mist it over my entire body after showering.
* Carol’s Daughter ~ Ecstasy which I can roll just a touch on my wrists.

I only shop at stores whose bags match my outfit. #sephora #stripes lol #totalaccident

The last two were part of a recent purchase at Sephora, wherein my outfit accidentally coordinated perfectly with the bag. I mean, the stripes are the exact same width!

It never ceases to amaze me how some people are so very sad. We should want to build each other up, not tear each other down. Jealousy, has never been stylish or classy. But maybe those women were going for the caddy, low class look, that always goes over well in back alleys and shady dives. You continually amaze me with your talent and style. Please continue to be the excellent you that you are.

Don’t ever let jealous, cruel, insecure people tear you down. I learned a long time ago not to get angry because there is a thing called karma and I believe in it strongly. Their punishment is that they have to live with themselves. You press on and keep being you. You are beautiful and wonderful and don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Here is a quote that I love… Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

And seriously – ‘stale cigarettes and broken dreams’? No wonder somebody is jealous of your book deal. That kind of writing sounds like it belongs in a teen romance series you would find in the clearance bin.

I would like to wish you, first of all, the greatest year, since so many of your dreams are about to come true and I truly wish you the best, eventhough I do not know you in person; but I guess that when a person decides to share a bit of her life for years with total strangers, and those on the other side decide to follow those flashes willingly, effortlessly and eagerly we kind of become friends. I´m from Portugal, I do not post very often but I follow your blog daily, anticipating with excitment what the news are going to be this time, never disappointing and always revigorated and inspired. Secondly I’d like to thank you for letting a door open for us, so that we could appreciate through the years the way you’ve evolved into someone so inspiring, so creative, so meticulous, so spontaneous, but above all, so genuinely true to yourself. Thank you, for I have also grown with you. I’ll keep on coming here, visiting you, hoping that if you come to my country one day, I’ll have the pleasure of welcoming you personally, opening then the doors of my house to you and hoping that you’ll feel at ease, just like I do, everytime I come to your blog. Cheers to you doll! Keep on being very Happy! and i hope that one day you may have time to visit my blog – it would be an honor!

Maegan, love you and your blog. My heart broke for you when you posted about your baby disappointment. People need to realize there are real people behind blogs with real feelings, hopes, dreams, and disappointments. Just because you fill the world with beautiful things on your blog doesn’t mean you don’t have real-life problems. People need to stop being jealous of the loveliness you share and realize you life isn’t some perfect fantasy to be jealous of. They should stop reading blogs and start writing one and see how hard it is to put yourself out there for people who hardly know you to criticize and judge.

Maegan, thank you for adding beauty to the world and sharing the truth about the not-so-happy parts of life with us also. You are a brave soul!

Maegan, those bitches be hatin’! I get so sick of that garbage. I used to work in a place where all of the women were like that (it takes an effort to be that nasty) and me? I’m too lazy to be nasty. Anyhoo, I love reading this here blog! It’s the #its!

I guess the mean girls grow up to become mean women, huh? Well, I love Ecstasy by Carol’s Daughter and have worn it since before I can remember. Great recommendations, I think I’ll try some of the other scents as well! Love your DIY’s by the way, keep up the good work!!!!

There are more of us who knew you smelled like cookies than thought you smelled like stale cigarettes. I enjoy your blog & appreciate the effort.

I suffer from an anxiety disorder. It was really bad a couple years ago – agoraphobia, panic attacks, etc. I have it under control now with Paxil and on occasion Xanax. I don’t like taking meds but I was such a mess… I keep taking them because I don’t want to ever feel the way I felt back then.
I am glad to hear about your experiences. It is always nice to hear that we are not alone with this problem.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.
