How We Spent Halloween...

We have a really fun neighborhood full of great people and tons of kiddos, who happen to remember that we always give out full-sized candy bars on Halloween AND we let them choose whatever they want. This year was no different really, except for the addition of Miss Delilah George, who was meant to go trick-or-treating in our neighborhood, but preferred helping us hand out candy to all the adorably costumed kids.

I hadn't really planned on dressing up but at the last minute decided to throw on an easy Farmer Girl look while the husband threw on a jersey and sweats and called himself Drew Brees off-duty {because you KNOW football players wear their jerseys when they're just hanging around ;}.

Here are some photos of our evening...

My bro & Delilah, wearing her 3 sizes too big Minni Mouse costume... even though my mom spent a month creating a lolly pop fairy costume that Delilah decided she did not want about a week ago, lol. She got really excited when another little girl dressed as Minnie came up to the door.

Delilah's candy bag was a pink and white striped Victoria's Secret bag, which I'm sure was my mother's doing.

DIY Gifting: Custom Painted Initial Canvas for Baby

DIY Gifting: Custom Painted Initial Canvas for Baby

In 2005 my cousin Kelley gave birth to her first baby girl, Avery... and for her baby shower, I painted a simple pink "A" on a yellow canvas with a few little flower details, to hang in the nursery. Avery, now 7, still has her "A" hanging in her room, which makes me a happy God Mama. My cousin is now preggo with her second girl, who will also have a name that begins with the letter "A" and asked me to paint an initial canvas for the new baby as well. I did this one a bit different than the last and since I wasn't blogging in 2005, I thought I'd post a little how-to in case anyone wanted to do the same.

Here's what you'll need...

DIY Gifting: Custom Painted Initial Canvas for Baby

* Canvas {I used a pre-stretched 11 x 14 canvas I found at Aaron Bros}
* Acrylic paints
* Paint brushes... cups for water & mixing paints {I use old take-out containers}
* White colored pencil

* If you don't find the exact color you're looking for in one tube, make your own by mixing like colors.

* Add a little water and stir until blended well into the color you like.

* Paint your entire canvas, including your edges and let dry.

* Acrylic paints are water-based and dry pretty quickly! {rinse off your brushes after use}

DIY Gifting: Custom Painted Initial Canvas for Baby

* I created polka-dots with a rubber wine cork...

* Space them however you like or begin at the center and work out like a grid.

DIY Gifting: Custom Painted Initial Canvas for Baby

* Use a paint brush to touch them up and fill in the gaps.

DIY Gifting: Custom Painted Initial Canvas for Baby

* Using a white colored pencil, lightly draw out your letter. ***You may also create or use a stencil if you don't trust your free-hand skills.

* Mix your pink and carefully paint your letter... * I chose a fancier "A" because she's a Lady, but use whichever font you prefer.

* Use a fine brush to touch it up... Once dry, you may need another coat so save your paint just in case!

** NOTE: Your paints may dry a bit darker than they look wet.

Voila!

Halloween Manicure : Black, Copper, & Silver Metallic Seismograph Nails...

Seismograph manicure, halloween nails

Halloween or not, this may be one of my new favorite manicures ever. Done with metallics, shimmers, and fine glitters, any three colors would look fantastic really. After compiling my Halloween manicure ideas from around the web, I was determined to create something different. And while this isn't spooky, I think it's a chic way to do a Halloween mani using the copper rather than a bright orange.... and in the end actually looked like a Seismograph. I just love it.

Here's how I did it...

I used only Sonia Kashuk nail polishes:
* Starry Night {black shimmer} | Smoke & Mirrors {silver} | Two Cent {copper}
* Seche Vite fast drying top coat {a favorite}

* Paint two coats of black to half of your nail, closest to the nail bed. It doesn't have to be perfect.

* Paint two coats of copper to the top half of your nail... and let dry.

* With your silver metallic, allow most of your paint to drip from your brush so it's more dry than wet and carefully create lines mimicking a Seismograph {earthquake meter} and fill in the blanks with all silver.

NOTE: this particular metallic silver is thick enough to go on and cover in one coat... I love it!

Voila!

* Obviously, my right handed work {on my left hand} is a little steadier than the other, creating more distinct lines, but the smudgier affect works as well.

My InstaLife : Week 10/20-27

I realize that many bloggers do a weekly Instagram recap on their blogs and until now I thought it was a little redundant considering my Instagram photos also pop up on my Facebook page & Twitter {though sometimes they don't}. However, not everyone is on Instagram and/or Facebook & Twitter and therefore missing out... or maybe not? Well, I thought I'd give it a try anyway and you can let me know if it's redundant or if you like it and think I should make it a weekly feature here, okay? There are a few bonuses, one being the link list below to any products, questions, etc. and two, it recaps my recent blog week as well, which may make it a bit easier to navigate. We'll see... So I give you, my week in photos via Instagram. {click to enlarge}
