I bought a Smashbox eyeshadow palette for Hazel eyes and there was a purple - it's hugely flattering!

It really depends on the shade. I've got tanned skin and a warm dark purple just looks like a bruise and highlights my dark circles. But a blue toned lavender works pretty well :)
