I sat down to write this post in a somewhat angry mood. I can’t explain why, but I wanted to scream and cry and throw things all at the same time. I did none of those things, because we’re taught to be good girls and boys and hold everything inside, so I distracted myself with looking through the songs I’d recently Shazammed on my phone hoping I’d find something to use for my title here.

Most of them didn’t fit this post; I was looking for a title that represented my outfit and my mood – my mood now, not when we shot these photos… When we shot these photos, I was happy. My mom (my photographer) and I have been leaving the comfort zone of where we normally shoot (quick and easy nearby my house generally) and instead opting to get in the car and seek new adventures and locations, and it’s been really fun actually. This particular one (the local library) made us both double over in laughter more than once. Maybe next time we’ll actually go inside… but thinking about it now makes me smile.

I’m so grateful for the relationship I have with my mom now. I think sometimes it takes age to settle into being super comfortable with your mom (or parents?) again, like you were when you were a kid. For me anyway. It took years. We always had a pretty close relationship, but it’s just different now. Mostly because I’m not worried her behavior is going to reflect on me and so I just let her be her and it’s nice. I realized it the other night while watching a movie called The Meddler with Rose Byrne and Susan Sarandon. The daughter was just mortified by everything her mother did… I remember those times, they were very long ago, but I remember them well. It’s a shame we waste so much time caring about those things that just don’t matter.

As I was searching for a song, I found this one on my list (the one I used) and was mesmerized while watching the video on youtube. It’s so fun seeing all these past styles and trends come to life again. I mean it makes me feel old, but I don’t care, it’s fun. There are so many times throughout fashion where it seems like style is ageless and timeless, that all ages can basically wear some version of the same thing or trend and pull it off. When I look at some of the things the “kids” are wearing these days (l.o.l.), I realize the generation gap has revisited us again, and it’s okay, it’s just I’m noticing.

And on top of it all, watching the video completely got me out of my funk. I mean, not entirely, but pretty close. I suddenly felt lighter and less worried about whatever it was that I was worried about and that’s what I love about music. It can instantly transport your mind, body and soul to another dimension in the most perfect way. Sometimes we like how a certain song makes us feel so much, we replay it over and over and over again until it becomes part of who we are. It’s not so much the song, it’s the way the song makes us feel… it’s something that art and writing and nature have the power to do as well. And it’s magic.
