What I’m Wearing…

* Old grey cashmere mock neck sweater
* Deep mauve lace up sweats (or “fleece jogger” if you wanna get fancy) … which I just bought (for $10) at The Parlour Room ~ my hair stylist (Shannon)’s new salon! …who has a room upstairs filled with clothes from the previous owner, Lola’s boutique, and everything is half off or more! If you’re local, stop by and shop a little! (she’s in Aqua Fria, right before the stop sign)
* Teal coat by BB Dakota, a few years old now – this one with faux fur collar is expensive but SO CUTE
* Beanie by Hat Attack
* Barton Perreira sunglassessimilar here
* Sophie Hulme bag with my DIY Flower Bag Strap
* Nike M2K Tekno (90s dad sneakers) which I actually LOVE 😉 I know, I know…

* Title: Major Lazer – Blow That Smoke (Feat. Tove Lo) …Darkness bring out our emotions… Mix em up with night life potions… Countless times we catch the sunrise… Fix em scars we share with white lies… I got the keys to heaven now… Suddenly doors just open wide

Soooooooo, by now, everyone knows about the fires taking California by storm -for the last week or so (more popping up daily) and it’s truly devastating.

It’s difficult to think about anything else really… the people, their loss, the animals… THE ANIMALS. I just can’t. I’ve literally cried over the displaced animals more times than I want to admit… It’s devastating and heartbreaking and I can’t even think about it for one more second.

The Woolsey fire is about two hours from where I live now (without traffic). But it’s still my home. I have friends and family as close as two miles from the flames, some closer, some evacuated, all are safe, but the landscape is anything but.

California is peppered with incredible mountains and hills and canyons and forested land (along with deserts and beaches and beauty beyond words -yes, I love my state), but we never seem to get enough water to keep everything moist and green. Even if we’re not experiencing a “drought”, we are in the midst of a drought. We never seem to be safe from fires. Maybe it’s the heat and the dryness, maybe it’s the high winds, maybe it’s the “gross mismanagement of the forests” (according to our President), but regardless, more precipitation would definitely help.

Unfortunately, we get weather in extremes, and when it finally rains, IT literally POURS and then we have landslides (or mudslides), which will, undoubtedly happen in Malibu (as it has before) now especially since the fires have devastated the land… and then soon after, we’ll probably get an earthquake, just to round out the devastation.

But when the weather is perfect (as it is most of the rest of the time) everything else is perfect too. And that’s why it seems that no one is ever prepared for disaster when it strikes.

And I think it’s time to get prepared.

I live in a high risk fire zone as well, and it’s terrifying. But clearly I don’t fear a real risk or I’d be prepared… and I’m not, even a little.

I know that if I only had a limited amount of time to grab a few things and get out, my dogs would be first on the list and my purse and car keys and I’d go (if, of course, my car was available to me and not in flames). Obviously, if I was prepared, I’d just grab my survival kit (after placing the dogs safely in the car, of course) and then go and I’d be far better off – because of all the preparedness, of course.

So my short term goal now is to become PREPARED and I hope to accomplish this very soon because not a day has gone by that my mind hasn’t been completely or partially focused on the fires.

But before I share all the items I’d place in my fire safety survival kit (beyond dog leashes, dog food, water, cleansing wipes, and a few other items I’ve recently learned were important, thank you Instagram) I’ll have to do a bit more research because I wouldn’t want to give any poor advice. And maybe I’ll do an Instagram poll to see what you guys would pack in your fire safety and survival kit… I’d also like to get a home fire safety evacuation kit including drop down stairs in case anyone is trapped upstairs and include a complete evacuation plan as well.

I’ve donated to the firefighters, risking their lives and shared socially, but still feel rather helpless in this whole situation (and a few fires have popped up much closer to me now)… but I know there are so many kind souls offering help, shelter, fostering pets, housing, supplies and more, and it makes my heart smile. Gratitude during devastation is the true test of spirit, I think, and so many who are now homeless and have lost everything still seem to have a positive perspective, which is truly amazing.

I couldn’t find any similar lace up sweats online, BUT Revolve has a bunch of cute styles… that are totally different, but still, cute.

And Shopbop has a ridiculously cute selection of Pink Pants … it’s funny what you find while you’re searching for something. Sometimes you get lucky 🙂

cute dad sneakers, nike shoes

After all these months, I finally caved and bought a pair of chunky dad trainers… and you know what? I kind of love them… *cringe* They’re not bad, besides being totally comfortable, duh, they’re cute… though these Nike’s are a bit more subtle than the gigantic, dirty-looking Balenciagas. I really like these.

Also, there really was no other shoe option that would have worked with this look (besides my pink nikes, my actual workout shoes) and to be honest, the little grey socks made the difference. I am usually a sneaker with no sock fan (though I wear tiny no-show socks), this look was only completed by little ankle socks, that happened to match.

If it were 1989, I’d have layered two pairs of socks in alternating but matching colors, because obviously 😉

Happy Hump Day Lovecats!
